Punch, the viral Japanese macaque who captured international attention after seeking comfort in a stuffed orangutan toy, has reached his first birthday at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Zoo officials reported receiving more than 2,500 birthday cards from supporters worldwide as the young monkey completed his transition into the facility's main macaque troop.
Born on July 26, 2025, Punch was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth. Caretakers hand-raised the infant and provided him with a large plush orangutan—an IKEA Djungelskog toy—to act as a surrogate mother. The plush companion allowed Punch to practice essential macaque clinging instincts while building physical strength during his early development. Images and video footage of Punch dragging the oversized plush toy around his enclosure went viral on social media in early 2026 under the hashtag #HangInTherePunch. The online exposure led to a dramatic increase in park attendance, with daily visitor figures at the suburban Tokyo zoo doubling compared to previous years.
Zoo staff began integrating Punch into the park’s main "Monkey Mountain" enclosure, home to roughly 60 macaques, in early 2026. While the young monkey initially exhibited signs of social anxiety and reliance on his plush toy, zookeepers report that he has gradually gained confidence and built social bonds with other juvenile macaques. According to zoo officials, Punch now spends the majority of his time interacting and playing with other troop members, relying less on the stuffed plush as he settles into group life.
