Malaysia: Woman Gets 12 Years for Stabbing Boyfriend to Death Over S*x Demand
An appellate court in Malaysia has significantly increased the prison sentence for a woman convicted of stabbing her boyfriend to death following a dispute over a s*xual demand, raising her term to 12 years.
A Malaysian appeals court has increased the prison sentence of a woman convicted of culpable homicide after she stabbed her boyfriend to death during a confrontation at a hotel in Johor Bahru in 2022. The Court of Appeal raised her jail term from six-and-a-half years to 12 years, ruling that the original sentence had been too lenient given the seriousness of the offence, according to a report.
Malaysian Court Nearly Doubles Prison Sentence
The woman, identified only as Shy to protect her identity, was 19 at the time of the incident. Her sentence was initially set at six-and-a-half years by the Johor Bahru High Court. However, a three-judge Court of Appeal panel increased the sentence to 12 years. Judge Evrol Mariette Peters said the lower court had placed excessive emphasis on the woman's young age and had not given sufficient weight to the gravity of her actions.
Incident Took Place at Johor Bahru Hotel
According to court papers, Shy and her then 29-year-old boyfriend checked into a hotel near Jalan Austin Heights in Johor Bahru on September 20, 2022. The couple had reportedly been in a relationship for about a year. The confrontation began after the man asked for s*x and Shy refused. She told him she was menstruating, after which, according to the court records, the man pulled out a knife and threatened her. Struggle Over Knife Led to Fatal Stabbing
Court documents said Shy struggled with her boyfriend to take the knife away from him. During the confrontation, she stabbed him multiple times in the chest. A post-mortem examination later found that the man had suffered 28 stab wounds. The case resulted in Shy's conviction for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Appeal Court Cites Seriousness of Offence
In increasing the prison term, the appeals court said the sentencing process needed to adequately reflect the seriousness of the offence. The case has drawn attention in Malaysia following the significant increase in Shy's sentence, with the Court of Appeal concluding that the original punishment had been overly sympathetic towards the accused.
