Jalna (Maha), Aug 20 (PTI) The police in Maharashtra's Jalna district on Tuesday registered a case against two men for allegedly stealing blank cheques from the zilla parishad (ZP) and trying to withdraw Rs 33 lakh.
The accused were identified as Manoj N Gaikwad and Sunil S Ratnaparkhe.
On August 13, a clerk in the accounts department found that six blank cheques on the zilla parishad's State Bank account were missing. Chief accountant Uttam Chavan alerted SBI, instructing it to stop payment if the cheques were presented, a police official said.
The accused, after allegedly stealing the cheques, forged the signature of the chief finance officer of the ZP and deposited them, seeking to encash Rs 33 lakh.
However, no payment was made, and a case of forgery and theft under the IPC was lodged against Gaikwad and Ratnaparkhe at Kadim Jalna police station.
No arrest has been made yet.
