India News | Bengal Doctors' Forum Resents TMC MLA's 'threat' to Medic, Writes to Chief Secy

Kolkata, Jul 11 (PTI) The West Bengal Doctors Forum (WBDF) on Friday wrote to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, expressing umbrage over TMC MLA Kanchan Mullick allegedly threatening an on-duty doctor with transfer, after he had to wait in a queue for the treatment of a relative at a state-run medical facility here.

It described Mullick's behaviour as a "clear violation” of the West Bengal Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2009.

"We are of the firm opinion that such behaviour cannot and must not be condoned under any circumstances. Mr Mullick must be dealt with as per the law, without delay or discrimination," WBDF president Dr Koushik Chaki said.

The forum also demanded that the state government issue directions to hospitals to immediately lodge complaints with the police in case similar incidents were reported.

A strong message "must be sent that violence in healthcare will not be tolerated anywhere", it said in the letter.

The alleged incident took place when Mullick was waiting in the queue at the outpatient department of the School of Tropical Medicine in Kolkata with his wife Srimoyee for the treatment of his aunt-in-law.

While waiting, he allegedly got involved in a war of words with the attending doctor, accusing him of delay in attending patients.
