Panchkula (Haryana) [India], October 26 (ANI): Several political leaders gathered at Gurudwara Nada Sahib in Panchkula on Sunday to attend the bhog and antim ardas for late Haryana IPS Y Puran Kumar, who died by suicide earlier this month.

ADGP Y Puran Kumar had died by suicide at his residence in Sector 11 on October 7.

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema also attended the condolence gathering for Y Puran Kumar and demanded justice for his family, alleging that he was a victim of caste-based violence.

"Today, we all gathered to pay our respects to Y Puran Kumar. People from many political parties and religious groups came. Puran Kumar committed suicide a few days ago after falling victim to caste-based violence by the state government," Cheema said.

The minister alleged that the circumstances leading to Puran Kumar's death reflected systemic discrimination and demanded accountability from the authorities.

"I believe this was a grave atrocity against him and his family. We demand that they get justice," he said.

Congress leader Udit Raj also raised concerns over the ongoing investigation into the alleged suicide of Y Puran Kumar, claiming that no progress had been made in the case so far.

Speaking to ANI in Panchkula, Raj said he had met the family of the deceased, including his wife and brother, and shared their distress over the stalled inquiry.

"I met his wife, his brother, and other family members. We understand their mental state at this time. But the problem is that the investigation into his suicide hasn't progressed even a little. Shatrujeet Kapur hasn't been suspended, and there are doubts about what happened to ASI Sandeep Lather," Udit Raj said.

He said the issue had gone beyond an individual tragedy, calling it "a battle of ideology.""I think this is a battle of ideology, and this battle should be fought broadly," he added.

Earlier on Thursday, Union Minister Manohar Lal met with the family of Puran Kumar and assured them of assistance from the government.

Addressing a press conference in Rohtak, Manohar Lal said, "It was a very unfortunate incident, and I visited the bereaved family. The government will provide whatever assistance is needed to the family. The Chief Minister has already made announcements for assistance."

Earlier, sharing an X post, the Union Minister paid condolences to the IPS officer's family.

He wrote, "Today, upon reaching the residence of IAS Amneet P. Kumar located in Chandigarh, tributes were paid to the late IPS Y. Pooran Kumar, and deep condolences were expressed to the family members. May the Lord pray to grant a place at His divine feet to the departed soul and bestow upon the bereaved family the courage and strength to bear this immense sorrow."

Amid the ongoing probe into the case, the police have taken possession of the deceased officer's laptop following court orders. The court had directed that the entire process of handing over and transferring the laptop be recorded to ensure data security.

The case took a turn when ASI Sandeep Lathar, who was found dead in suspicious circumstances in Rohtak on October 14, accused the late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar and his family of corruption. (ANI)
