Nigerian Navy Chief in Kochi to Strengthen Ties

Kochi, Jul 18 (PTI) Chief of Naval Staff of the Nigerian Navy Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, accompanied by a four-member delegation, is on a two-day visit to the Southern Naval Command to strengthen further the naval relations between India and the African nation.

Vice-Admiral AR Karve, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, held a discussion with the Nigerian naval officer on training-related issues and other areas of common interest, a defence release here said today.

The Nigerian navy chief, who commenced the two-day visit here, was received by Rear Admiral K Swaminathan, Chief Staff Officer (CSO) Training, at the naval air station, INS Garuda, the release said.

Ibas visited Indian Naval Air Squadron, the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) squadron, the water survival training facility, ship-handling simulator and the sail training ship INS Sudarshini, it said. Interestingly, Ibas had undergone the sub-Lieutenant technical courses at INS Venduruthy from April 1983 to May 1984, it further said.

India traditionally has enjoyed warm relations with Nigeria owing to shared historical and cultural links, the release added.
