Madrid [Spain], Feb 10 (ANI): Thousands of protesters thronged the streets of Madrid on Sunday, making calls for fresh elections "for a united Spain" after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez proposed talks to ease tensions in Catalonia. The demonstrations were organised by two centre-right parties, Popular party and Ciudadanos, and far-right Vox Party. Calls for Sanchez's resignation were made by the protesters who collected at the Plaza de Colon here on February 10."Historical day in the Plaza de Colón. The United Spain has said enough to the blackmail and the cessions before the nationalists. Next stage, 26M. If you do not go, Sanchez stays. #UnidosPorEspaña (United for Spain), elections already," Pablo Casado, the President of the People's Party tweeted in Spanish on Sunday.Día histórico en la Plaza de Colón. La España unida ha dicho basta al chantaje y las cesiones ante los nacionalistas. Próxima etapa, 26M. Si no vas, Sánchez se queda. #UnidosPorEspaña, elecciones ya. pic.twitter.com/1oVQiLjPxx— Pablo Casado Blanco (@pablocasado_) February 10, 2019"We are here to say NO to separatism and YES to Spain, it's enough! We want #EleccionesYa (Elections Now) and go to the polls, Sánchez cheated us by mounting a motion of censure and not calling elections # UnidosPorEspaña, " Ciudadanos, or the Citizens party quoted its President Albert Rivera as saying at the rally.Amid the ongoing protests, embattled Prime Minister Sanchez tweeted, "The #Government works for the unity of #Spain and this means uniting the Spaniards and not confronting them as the right does. Democracy is not expensive or cross, there are many alternatives. And ours is coexistence, law and dialogue in # Catalonia," in Spanish.Opposition leaders in Madrid are seeing Sanchez's proposal - to appoint a rapporteur for negotiations across political parties to address the situation in Catalonia - as treason, reports Sputnik. They are reportedly viewing Sanchez's proposal as succumbing to the pressure of those who have called for Catalonian independence. The protests come just a few days before the trial of Catalan independence leaders who allegedly spearheaded the failed secession bid in Spain in 2017.
