Leeds (England), Sep 20 (AP) The first match of the one-day international series between England and Ireland at Headingley was abandoned without a ball being bowled Wednesday because of wet weather.
Soggy conditions meant the teams never got on the field and the captains shook hands at 4.50 p.m. local time (1550 GMT).
England was planning to use the game to give Joe Root more time in the middle ahead of the Cricket World Cup after a poor run of scores for the batter in the recent series against New Zealand.
The second game of the series is at Trent Bridge on Saturday. (AP)
