Following the BJP's historic and sweeping victory in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the state will finally get the Centre's flagship health insurance scheme Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), which provides cashless medical cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year. The announcement came during PM Modi's victory speech at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, marking one of the first and most significant policy promises for the people of Bengal under the incoming BJP government.

"A journey for the future of Bengal is beginning today, one where development, steadfast trust, and new hopes will march forward hand-in-hand. I assure every resident of Bengal that the BJP will work day and night for a better future for the state," PM Modi said in his address to jubilant BJP workers and karyakrtas. ‘Historic Day’: PM Narendra Modi Thanks Voters for Showing Trust As BJP Registers Strong Gains in Assembly Election Result 2026.

Making a direct reference to the health scheme, the Prime Minister further said, "In Bengal, women will now find an environment of safety, and the youth will find employment. Migration will come to a halt. In the very first cabinet meeting, the Ayushman Bharat scheme will be given the green signal." PM Narendra Modi’s First Reaction on BJP’s Historic Win in West Bengal: ‘The Lotus Blooms in Bengal, People’s Power Has Prevailed’.

West Bengal had been one of the last remaining states to not implement the Ayushman Bharat scheme, with the Trinamool Congress government under Mamata Banerjee declining to adopt it, citing the state's own health insurance programmes. With Bengal now joining the fold, all 36 states and Union Territories across India will have the popular scheme in place. The AB-PMJAY scheme automatically covers all citizens above 70 years of age and has been widely praised for shielding families from the devastating financial impact of high medical treatment costs. Odisha and Delhi implemented the scheme last year after their respective change in governments.

The BJP's landslide victory in West Bengal, with the party ahead in over 200 seats well past the majority mark, has ended the Trinamool Congress's 15-year rule in the eastern state. The announcement of Ayushman Bharat for Bengal is being seen as the BJP's first concrete step towards fulfilling its promise of development and good governance for the people of the state.
