IIT Guwahati Student Death: Third-Year BTech Student Dies After Fall From Campus Building, Cops Suspect Suicide

A third-year BTech student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati died after allegedly falling from a building on the institute's campus on Sunday afternoon, July 26. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and said they have not ruled out the possibility of suicide. The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem examination and completion of the investigation.

The deceased has been identified as Ritesh Raj Singh, a third-year Computer Science and Engineering student from Odisha. He was residing at the Brahmaputra Hostel on the IIT Guwahati campus. Police said Singh's body was recovered from the spot and sent for post-mortem examination. Officials stated that the exact cause of death would be known only after the autopsy report is received and the investigation is completed.

The Kamrup Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the incident. In a statement issued on Monday, IIT Guwahati said it was extending full cooperation to the investigating authorities. “The Institute is cooperating fully with the police, who are investigating the matter, and we are awaiting their findings before we share any further information on this matter," the institute said.

The institute added that Ritesh Singh's parents were on their way to the campus and that IIT Guwahati was in close contact with the family, extending all necessary support during the difficult time.

Expressing grief over the student's death, IIT Guwahati Director Professor Devendra Jalihal described the incident as a profound loss for the institute and conveyed his condolences to the student's family in a message to the campus community, according to local media reports. The institute also appealed to the public to refrain from speculation until the facts surrounding the incident are established.
