A 21-year-old kidney patient died in his father's lap inside a government ambulance in Madhya Pradesh's Mandla district after the vehicle's oxygen supply allegedly ran out mid-journey. The tragic incident, which took place on July 27, gained widespread attention after a video surfaced on social media on Friday, July 31, prompting local authorities to launch a formal investigation into alleged emergency negligence. The victim, Ajit Baraiya, was a resident of Sunhera Mal village and had been receiving regular dialysis treatment at the district hospital, according to officials.

Family Alleges Severe Delay and Oxygen Shortage

According to the family's account, Ajit's condition deteriorated at home, prompting his father to call for an emergency ambulance to transport him to the community health centre in Bamhani. The family claimed that emergency responders initially denied the patient oxygen despite his breathing difficulties. Although doctors later administered oxygen after referring him back to the district hospital, the supply inside the ambulance reportedly depleted just three kilometers into the trip. Madhya Pradesh Teacher Suffers 2 Broken Ribs After Bystanders Mistake Heat-Induced Fainting for Heart Attack (Watch Video).

"My son died gasping for breath in the ambulance. The ambulance arrived one hour after we dialled for it, and the oxygen supply ran out 3 km into the journey to the Mandla district hospital, and he died before we could reach there," the grieving father told local reporters, adding that timely oxygen availability could have saved his life. Madhya Pradesh: 5 Killed After Speeding Car Plunges Into Roadside Dam in Rajgarh (Video).

Administration Launches Four-Member Inquiry

A video circulating on social media captured the distress inside the vehicle, showing the young man on a stretcher accompanied by his grieving father. In response to the public outcry and media reports, the district health administration has stepped in to fix accountability. Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. D.J. Mohanty confirmed that a four-member inquiry committee has been formed to probe the circumstances surrounding the death. "The committee has been asked to submit its report at the earliest so that appropriate action can be taken against those found responsible," Dr. Mohanty said.
