Vineet Minocha Murder: Why Did His Daughter-in-Law Plot His Killing?

Kanpur medicine trader Vineet Minocha was found stabbed 26 times inside his apartment, with police initially suspecting a robbery. The investigation allegedly uncovered a domestic conspiracy, leading to the arrest of his 36-year-old daughter-in-law Shalu, who is accused of plotting the murder and hiring domestic help to kill him.

A murder that initially looked like a robbery gone wrong in Kanpur has turned into a case of alleged domestic conspiracy, with police arresting a 36-year-old woman for allegedly orchestrating the killing of her 63-year-old father-in-law, medicine trader Vineet Minocha. Investigators say Shalu, upset over the restrictions her father-in-law placed on her spending and lifestyle, paid domestic help Vishal INR 6 lakh to have him killed.

Vineet was found dead with 26 stab wounds inside his flat at Ratan Orbit Apartment in Kalyanpur on the night of September 6, after his son Subrat and daughter-in-law Shalu returned from a party around 3 am to find his blood-soaked body.

How The Case Cracked Open

The breakthrough came after police reviewed CCTV footage and identified domestic help Vishal and his accomplice Raj Kishore entering and later leaving the apartment, Dainik Bhaskar reported. Both men were picked up in an encounter later that night. When questioned by reporters about the motive, Vishal reportedly said he had carried out the killing on Shalu's instructions in exchange for money.

That statement led police to detain Shalu overnight. She initially tried to mislead investigators but eventually broke down and confessed, telling police that despite marrying into a wealthy family, she had to beg her father-in-law for even small expenses, which pushed her to have him killed. Nagpur: Husband Kills Wife After Row Over Cooking as She Prepared to Attend Dance.

A Long-Running Dispute Over Freedom And Money

According to police, tensions had been building for weeks. Vineet had installed CCTV cameras across the flat in July to monitor his daughter-in-law's movements, and controlled how much money she could spend. Investigators believe the final trigger came on July 28, when Vineet scolded Shalu for returning from a late-night party, sparking an argument that allegedly set her murder plan in motion the same day.

Police say Shalu called Vishal to her home on September 4 to finalise the plan, and had handed him a duplicate key to the flat around two weeks earlier. The original idea, according to investigators, was to smother Vineet with a pillow while he slept so the death would look like a heart attack. Guwahati: Man Murders Wife, Decapitates Body and Stores Head in Fridge.

That plan fell apart when Vineet, who felt hungry that night, got up to eat and began locking up the flat room by room. He stumbled upon Vishal and Raj Kishore hiding in his son's bedroom and confronted them, at which point the two allegedly attacked him with a knife and killed him.

Phone Records And A Guard's Statement Seal The Case

Call records examined by police showed Shalu and Vishal spoke around 35 to 40 times in the weeks before the murder, and 14 times on the day itself, starting from 9 am. Police also spoke to the apartment's security in-charge, who said Shalu had called ahead to let Vishal and his accomplice into the building, telling the guard they had come with medicines.

Investigators say the assailants took nothing from the flat, which further pointed to a targeted, contract killing rather than a robbery. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi said Vineet Minocha ran one of Kanpur's top medicine trading firms and that the involvement of the daughter-in-law is being investigated further, with the accused already arrested.

A Family And A Complex Under Scrutiny

Vineet ran his medicine business, Pharma Traders, with son Subrat, reportedly clocking an annual turnover of INR 40-50 crore. Police say preliminary investigation has found no role for Subrat in the murder, though he has been kept at the police station for further questioning.

The killing has also raised questions about security at Ratan Orbit Apartment, a complex of over 1,000 flats with roughly 45 guards and 650 CCTV cameras. Officials noted that only three guards were on duty at the main gate that night, and the entry register showed no visitor logged between 8:28 pm and 10 pm, the window during which the accused are believed to have entered.
