Many social media users criticised the apparent lack of cleanliness in the viral clip, with several questioning food safety standards during train travel.

The vendor was reportedly sitting near the coach doorway beneath a wash basin, an area many viewers described as visibly unhygienic. The incident raised concerns about contamination risks and the possibility of foodborne illnesses for passengers purchasing snacks during journeys. Following the circulation of the video, railway authorities launched an enquiry into the incident and later issued an official statement. “An enquiry on the matter has been conducted. During the enquiry, prima facie, no such staff was found deployed onboard in Train no. 12809-10 from 20.05.2026 to 22.05.2026,” the Railways said.

According to the statement, investigators did not identify the individual in the clip as an authorised onboard railway staff member during the period under review. Railways also stated that action had been initiated to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“Licensee has been sensitised and advised to report any such unauthorised activities by hawkers to the concerned controls on a real-time basis,” the statement added.

The incident has once again highlighted the challenge of monitoring unauthorised food vendors on long-distance train routes. Passengers have frequently raised complaints regarding food hygiene, cleanliness and pricing on trains over the years. Viral videos showing poor food handling practices have repeatedly drawn public attention to gaps in monitoring and enforcement.

Food safety experts often warn that improperly handled food in crowded public transport environments can increase the risk of gastrointestinal infections and other health complications.
