Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to commission INS Aridaman, India’s third indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), into the Indian Navy today. Built under the secretive Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project, this 7,000-tonne vessel marks a significant expansion of India’s maritime nuclear deterrent. The commissioning follows the successful induction of its predecessor, INS Arighaat, in August 2024. INS Aridaman is more capable than the lead ship, INS Arihant, featuring an upgraded 83 MW pressurized water reactor and enhanced stealth. It is designed to carry the K-4 intermediate-range ballistic missile, capable of striking targets up to 3,500 km away. This induction completes a critical milestone for the Strategic Forces Command, moving India closer to achieving continuous at-sea deterrence. The vessel’s superior sonar suites and indigenous communication systems further solidify India’s credible second-strike capability in the Indo-Pacific region. India’s Defence Exports Hit Record INR 38,424 Crore in FY 2025-26, Says Rajnath Singh.
