Bach Baras, also known as Govatsa Dwadashi, is an auspicious Hindu festival celebrated every year by the community. It is celebrated four days after Janmashtami. This year, we celebrate Bach Baras 2024 on August 30. The festival is marked by the worshipping of cows and their calves. On this day, mothers observe a fast for the wellbeing of their children. According to legend, or the Bach Baras Vrat Katha, a moneylender follows a Pandit's advice and sacrifices his grandson to fill a pond that was dry. However, the grandson is miraculously saved by a cow. But due to a mix-up, the cow’s calf mistakenly gets cooked and to cover the mistake, it is buried. But the cow, upon returning, digs up the buried pot, revealing the alive calf. Then an observance of Bach Baras fast for the miracle is announced. The calf became a symbol of a miracle and, since then, is worshipped along with cows.
