Chennai, Sep 6 (PTI) Tamil Nadu on Tuesday logged 449 new coronavirus infections including four returnees from domestic and overseas locations, pushing the overall tally to 35,71,479, the Health department said.

The death toll rose to 38,037 as a man from neighbouring Kancheepuram district died due to COVID-19 pneumonia, a medical bulletin said.

As many as 478 people recovered from the virus in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 35,28,482 leaving 4,960 active infections.

Chennai logged the majority of cases at 79 followed by Coimbatore (58) while the remaining was spread among districts. Ramanathapuram and Perambalur recorded the least with zero new cases each.

Twenty-two districts reported new cases below 10 while the state capital leads among districts with 2,139 active infections and an overall 7,87,959 coronavirus cases.

A total of 17,267 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of tests to 6,90,19,187 till date.

A 42-year old man from Kancheepuram ailing with 'myotonic dystrophy' was admitted to the Government Omandurar Medical College and Hospital in the city with complaints of fever, difficulty in breathing and dry cough.

He breathed his last on September 4 due to COVID-19 pneumonia/ acute respiratory distress syndrome, the bulletin said.
