Patna (Bihar) [India], Dec 3 (ANI): Mukesh Singh, a police constable, who was shot at during an exchange of fire between police and criminals in an encounter here, on Monday succumbed to his injuries.

Briefing the media about the incident, Patna SSP Manu Maharaj said that the constable sustained serious injuries and died while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

"The criminals had attacked him from behind, due to which he suffered serious injuries. There were two criminals and a nine-member police team," Maharaj said.

He said that the police acted on a tip-off about the presence of two criminals in the city, following which the encounter between goons and the police took place.

A criminal, named Ujjwal, wanted in several murder cases was arrested, while his accomplice escaped.

"The encounter took place at about 6:30 pm. Five to ten rounds of firing were shot. We ensured that the public were not affected during the incident. Our team did a great job and showed bravery," Maharaj said.

The deceased constable is survived by his wife and three children. Patna SSP further said that the police would donate a day's salary to the family of the deceased jawan. (ANI)
