New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) A criminal wanted in more than 25 cases and carrying a bounty of Rs 25,000 on his head has been arrested following a brief shoot out in Delhi's Dhaula Kuan area, police said Wednesday.

The accused, Jitender alias Jitu, was nabbed on Tuesday.

Police said he was a member of the Kranti gang and became the leader after its chief Rajesh Bharti, along with three others, was shot dead in an encounter a few months ago by the Delhi Police's Special Cell.

A trap was laid on Tuesday following a tip off that Jitendra will be coming to Dhaula Kuan along with his associates in a white Hyundai Creta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah said.

When police tried to apprehend the accused and asked him to surrender, he whipped out a pistol and opened fire, the DCP said.

Subsequently Jitender was nabbed, while his associates managed to flee, he said.

A pistol and six cartridges were recovered from him, Kushwah said.

Jitender is wanted in cases of murder, attempt to murder, robbery and carjacking, he said.
