New Delhi, February 14: A female journalist, Ruchi Tiwari, has alleged she was targeted and physically assaulted by a mob during a protest at Delhi University’s North Campus. The incident occurred during a demonstration related to the University Grants Commission (UGC) Equity Regulations, where Tiwari claims she was singled out and attacked based on her caste identity.
Tiwari, who was at the Faculty of Arts to cover the event for the YouTube channel Breaking Opinion, stated that the confrontation began when members of the crowd asked for her full name and caste. According to her account, after she identified herself as a Brahmin, a group of approximately 500 people surrounded her and began a coordinated assault that lasted nearly thirty minutes. The journalist described a harrowing ordeal involving physical manhandling and severe verbal abuse. She alleged that several women in the crowd whispered rape threats in her ear and specifically threatened her with public humiliation, saying, "Aaj tu chal, tera nanga parade nikalenge" (Come today, we will take out your naked parade). Tiwari also claimed that her clothes were torn and that she was improperly touched during the scuffle, characterizing the event as an attempt to murder and a mob lynching scenario.
The incident has sparked a sharp exchange of allegations between rival student factions on campus. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) condemned the act as a cowardly assault by Left-wing groups, stating that the violence reflects a declining political culture. Conversely, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) dismissed Tiwari’s claims as fake narrations, alleging instead that their members were the ones targeted by right-wing elements while attempting to manage the chaos.
Tiwari reported that she briefly lost consciousness during the attack and expressed disappointment in the initial police response at the scene. She noted that she was eventually able to leave the area with the assistance of a few law faculty members and female police personnel who showed humanity during the crisis.
