The exit poll released by Times Now-VMR predicts a hung assembly, with the ruling Congress likely to win 97 seats, followed by the BJP which could bag 94. The JD(S), meanwhile, is expected to be restricted at 28.

Although the exit poll outcome should not be treated as a replica of the official results, the surveys end up presenting a grim picture of what would be the results after the Election Commission of India concludes the counting of votes.

Before Karnataka went to polls, five of the six major opinion polls predicted a fractured mandate. Four of the pre-election surveys said the Congress would emerge as the single-largest party, inching close to the halfway mark. Meanwhile, only one opinion poll - released by Republic-Jan Ki Baat - had predicted the BJP to emerge as the single-largest.
