New Delhi [India], July 11 (ANI): Professor Mohammad Shakeel was appointed as the Officiating Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia on Thursday.
He has been appointed as the Officiating Vice-Chancellor, till a regular Vice Chancellor of the university assumes office, according to an official release.
"Hon'ble President of India in her capacity as the Visitor of Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI), in the exercise of powers conferred upon her by the Act or Statutes of the University has been pleased to approve the appointment of Prof. Mohammad Shakeel as the Officiating Vice-Chancellor as per Statute 2(6) of JMI Act, 1988," the release said.
Shakeel is the senior Professor at the university at present, it said.

Earlier on May 22, Jamia Millia Islamia had appointed Mohammad Shakeel as its Officiating Vice Chancellor, hours after the Delhi High Court quashed the appointment of Eqbal Hussain.
Later, Hussain moved a plea in the Delhi High Court challenging the appointment of Prof Shakeel as the Officiating Vice Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia University.
In response to this, the Delhi High Court, on May 29, sought a response from Jamia Millia Islamia University on a plea moved by Professor Eqbal Hussain and directed to appoint an officiating VC within one week.
Division bench of Justices Vibhu Bakhru and Tara Vitasta Ganju issued notice to Jamia, Central Government and University Grant Commission (UGC) and others. The matter has been listed on August 12 for a hearing.
The bench in a judgment of May 22 had said, "Since the respondent no. 2 (Eqbal Hussain) has not been appointed in terms of Statute, his continuation in the office of Vice Chancellor as the Officiating Vice Chancellor cannot be permitted further." (ANI)
