New Delhi, March 13: India’s largest carrier, IndiGo, announced on Friday that it will begin levying a fuel surcharge on all domestic and international flight tickets starting March 14, 2026. The airline cited a "sharp surge" in global aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, triggered by the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The decision by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. follows a similar move by Air India earlier this week. According to the IATA Jet Fuel Monitor, fuel prices in the region have skyrocketed by more than 85% as geopolitical tensions between Iran, Israel, and the U.S. disrupt energy supply routes, including the critical Strait of Hormuz.

The new surcharge is structured per sector and varies by destination. Domestic travelers will see an additional levy of ₹425, while those flying to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and China will face a ₹900 to ₹1,800 increase. Longer international routes, such as flights to Europe and Africa, will attract a surcharge of up to ₹2,300. IndiGo stated that the "sudden and steep" increase in ATF prices has had a material impact on its cost structure, as fuel typically accounts for nearly 40% of an airline’s operating expenses. The company noted it opted for a smaller surcharge to minimize the impact on flyers, despite the surge in oil prices requiring a more "substantial adjustment" to base fares. IndiGo Imposes New Fuel Surcharge on Domestic and International Flights

The aviation industry in India is currently facing a "double whammy" of rising crude costs and a weakening rupee against the U.S. dollar. Industry experts suggest that other low-cost carriers, including SpiceJet and Akasa Air, are also in discussions to implement similar levies to remain commercially viable. IndiGo, which operates a fleet of over 400 aircraft, said it will continue to monitor the volatile crude oil market and adjust the surcharge as the situation evolves.
