SP candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel was declared winner from Phulpur Lok Sabha constituency. His victory is expected to cause major embarrassment to the ruling BJP in the state, as bypoll was necessitated following the appointment of incumbent MP Keshav Prasad Maurya as the Deputy CM.

Dedicating his victory to the BSP, which extended backchannel support to the SP, the winning candidate said, "I want to specially thank Mayawati ji and dedicate this victory to her. I want to thank the BSP workers as well. The message is clear. We are two parties but have one ideology."

The Samajwadi Party, backed by two-decade-old rival BSP, is likely to wrest the Gorakhpur constituency from the BJP. The seat was last represented by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The loss in Gorakhpur is likely to dent the credibility of Yogi, who has represented the seat for five consecutive terms.

In Bihar, the RJD and BJP retained one seat each. From the Araria Lok Sabha seat, the Lalu Yadav-led party was leading by over 40,000 votes. For full report, click here.

In Bihar, the results were declared in two of the three constituencies. The seat of Jehanabad was won by RJD, whereas the Bhabhua constituency was won by the BJP.

The counting of votes was scheduled to begin at 8 am. Stay tuned here for the latest updates and results.

In Bihar, the RJD looks to defend two of the three constituencies - Araria LS and Jehanabad assembly seat - where the party lawmakers died due illness last year. The third assembly seat, Bhabhua, was held by the BJP.

Candidates in fray from Bihar

Araria: The Lok Sabha seat witnessed a direct battle between the RJD's Sarfaraz Alam and the BJP's Pradeep Sinha. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Alam's father Mohammad Taslimuddin had won the seat, whereas, Sinha emerged a close-runner up.

Jehanabad: The NDA is represented in this electoral fight by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U). The party has fielded Abhiram Sharma. The RJD's nominee is deceased MLA Mundrika Singh Yadav's son Sujay Yadav.

Bhabhua: BJP has fielded deceased legislator Anand Bhushan Pandey's wife Rinki Pandey from the seat. The RJD opted out of the electoral race, allowing it's Mahagathbandhan ally Congress to contest from the constituency. The party has nominated Shambhu Patel.

Candidates in fray from UP

In Uttar Pradesh, the seats of Phulpur and Gorakhpur fall vacant after the incumbent lawmakers - Keshav Prasad Maurya and Yogi Adityanath - were appointed as Deputy Chief Minister and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, respectively.

The BJP has fielded Kaushalendra Singh Patel from Phulpur to take on Congress' Manish Mishra and Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh. From Gorakhpur, the fight is between BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla and SP's Praveen Nishad. Meanwhile, the Congress candidate from the seat is Sureetha Kareem.

Interestingly, the BSP had extended support to Samajwadi Party ahead of the elections.
