Mahavir Jayanti: Religious Significance and Observance
Mahavir Jayanti, also known as Mahaveer Janma Kalyanak, commemorates the birth of Vardhamana Mahavira in 599 BCE in Kundagrama, Bihar. Born into royalty, Mahavira later renounced his kingdom to seek spiritual enlightenment, eventually establishing the core tenets of Jainism.
The festival is traditionally observed on the 13th day of the waxing moon in the month of Chaitra. This year, the Trayodashi Tithi began on the morning of March 30 and concludes on the morning of March 31, with the main celebrations taking place today.
Morning Rituals and Temple Traditions
The day began at dawn with devotees visiting local Jain temples for Abhisheka, the ceremonial bathing of Lord Mahavira’s idol. Temples have been elaborately decorated with fresh flowers and traditional flags.
In major hubs such as Vaishali, Palitana, and Shravanabelagola, massive Shobha Yatras (processions) are being held. During these events, the idol of the Tirthankara is carried on a chariot while followers chant hymns and devotional songs, spreading the message of universal peace.
