Earlier days, whenever children suffered from chickenpox, it was considered that they have Mata. It meant that Sitala Devi is upset with them. She is known as the Goddess of smallpox. To please the Goddess, individuals used to make cold food called thado and offer her while worshipping. It is because of this significance that Vadi Thadri is also called as the cooling festival. Goddess Sitala is said to be the eldest of several sisters named after different kinds of diseases such as measles. The Sindhi community still follows the traditions.

During Vadi Thadri, popular delicacies are cooked that includes koki (sweet floured cakes), lola (fried cakes) and dry cooked dishes such as potato, lady’s-finger, bitter gourd. These are prepared a night before the festivity. Prayers are offered in front of the gas stove, after which drops of water are sprinkled to appease Sitala Devi.
