Google is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pi day on March 14 with a foodie doodle. Nailing it with a pun, the tech giant has represented the doodle with a mathematical formula showing the ratio between a circle's circumference and its diameter. Today's "delectable doodle is baked and built by award-winning pastry chef and creator of the Cronut, Dominique Ansel" says Google. And in case you were wondering, how to make it, the recipe is also available. The calculations illustrated (pastry, butter, apple and orange peel, pie) in the doodle also includes ingredients used to bake a salted caramel apple 'pie'. National Pi Day was coined by physicist Larry Shaw in 1988 to "celebrate with a slice of their favorite pie in honor of the number's delicious sounding name". March 14 was chosen as Pi Day to represent the first three figures of Pi i.e. 3.14.

Google says, "Though modern mathematicians have calculated more than one TRILLION decimal places beyond the standard '3.14'. pi is an irrational number that continues on to infinity! It's an important ingredient in the formula for the area of a circle, A=𝛑r²."

Here is how you can make the Salted Caramel Apple Pie shown in today's Google Doodle:

2. Melt butter over medium heat in a large saucepan. Add apples into melted hot butter and pour apple cider and bourbon. Cook on medium stirring occasionally for 30 minutes until the apples are tender.

3. Put out the flame and let it cool at room temperature.

Salted Caramel Sauce Ingredients

2 cup sugar

2 2/3 cups heavy cream

4 tbsp light corn syrup

½ cup dark brown sugar

2 tsp fleur de sel

Method

1. Put all the ingredients in a pot and boil it while stirring occasionally. As the mixture becomes thicker remove from the heat and pours it into a non-plastic container. Let it then cool at room temperature.

2. Whisk well and let it chill in the fridge. (The caramel sauce can be made up till two weeks ahead)

3. Remove the sauce from the fridge and bring it to room temperature an hour before you assemble the pie.

To Assemble & Bake (Ingredients)

Pie dough (chilled)

Apple pie filling (cooled)

Salted caramel sauce (cooled)

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Method

1. Heat the oven to 350°F.

2. Roll out a call of dough into a 12-inch round and transfer to a 9-inch pie dish, gently pressing up and down the sides. Pour cooled apples into the pie shell. Sprinkle some of the salted caramel sauce across the apples.

3. Roll out a ball of dough and cut strips that are 1" wide and 12" long. Keep half of the dough strips across the pie. Form a lattice by arranging the other half of strips diagonally across the first strips. Press around the rim of the pie with a fork and trim the edges if required.

4. Brush with egg wash on the surface and bake for 35-40 minutes until crust is deep golden brown. Let it cool for 30 minutes and then drizzle some more salted caramel sauce on top.

Salted Caramel Apple Pie is ready to serve.

It is believed that Larry Shaw was the first to celebrate the day at the Exploratorium in San Francisco with his friends and staff. The United States' House of Representatives had voted in favor of designating today as Pi day in 2009.
