Cassius, the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity, has passed away at the age of 110 at a wildlife sanctuary in Far North Queensland. Measuring 18 feet long (5.48 meters) and weighing approximately 2,600 pounds (1,179 kg), Cassius was a remarkable specimen that garnered attention worldwide. Captured in the Northern Territory during the 1980s, Cassius spent the majority of his life at Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat, located on Green Island off the coast of Cairns. The sanctuary announced his death on social media, referring to him as “our beloved mate” and a “cherished member of our family.” In 2011, Cassius earned the Guinness World Record for being the largest crocodile in captivity, solidifying his legacy as an extraordinary creature.
