Afghanistan vs Ireland Highlights And Cricket Score 1st Match - ODI Commentary
The visiting team, on the back of two 50-plus partnerships, first a 53-run stand between Gulbadin Naib and Rahmat Shah and then a 77-run stand between Naib and his skipper, were on course for a score of around 240-50. However, the Irish pacers came back strongly at the death, with Tim Murtagh taking career-best figures in this format. The Irish batsmen now have their work cut out. It will all depend on how they handle the Afghanistan spinners. After the T20I disappointment, can they show some grit and character to chase this one down and go one up in the series? We will find out on the other side of the break...
And Afghanistan end with a respectable total of 227. At one stage, when their skipper, Stanikzai and Shahidi were on the crease, they looked like crossing the 250-run mark easily. However, the Irish pacers, Murtagh and Rankin, with some tight bowling and some clever change of pace, did not allow the Afghanistan's lower order to run away with the game. Even though the visiting team's middle order milked the Irish spinners well through the middle phase of the innings, they would have dearly liked one of them to stay out there till the end and cross the three-figure mark. The regular fall of wickets after the 43rd over helped the home team to tighten the screws on the away team's run flow.
Boyd Rankin to Aftab Alam. Play and a miss to end the innings. 9 off the over, the tourists will be happy with that. Full toss fired well outside off, Alam fails to make any sort of connection. AFGHANISTAN FINISH ON 227/9!

Just behind a length, on the stumps, probably keeps a touch low as it skids off the surface. Naib swings across the line but misses to get hit on the thigh pad. Ireland did get rid of the dangerous Rahmat Shah, but since then Gulbadin Naib and Hashmatullah Shahidi have shored things up rather well with a 76-run stand. Boyd Rankin to Hazratullah Zazai. OUT! And he's gone! Can't make much of the life he was given. This is a good ball from Rankin. He once again hits the deck hard and has some good pace on it. It's quite accurate too as this takes the left-hander by surprise. He just hangs his bat out to it and it goes off the top half. Lobs straight towards Simi Singh at covers who takes it by running in. Zazai checks with the umpire, for a no ball it seems, but doesn't get the response he's looking for. Everything is alright and he's going to have to walk back. Big wicket for the hosts.

Stirling at second slip jumps a bit but ends up spilling it. Wilson behind has no chance to take it off the rebound as it falls behind him. It was Paul's catch only. Zazai survives. Will this prove costly for Ireland?

Two slips in place for him. Here we go...
Both teams are out for their respective national anthems. We begin with the away side's first.
TOSS - Ireland win the toss and will have a bowl first!
Before this tour started, it was quite difficult to tout who would be the favourites. Post the T20I series now, the choice is quite clear. A lot of credit must be given to the away side. Afghanistan have done stupendously well in unfamiliar conditions to blow the hosts away and take the T20I series 2-0. In the shortest format, the Afghans have performed well and have been going from strength to strength, they proved that by dominating the Irish in all three departments. The 50-over format is a different ball game altogether and it will be interesting to see how the home side fares. As always, there will be two battles - The Afghan spinners vs the Irish batsmen and the other, between the Irish pacers vs the Afghan batters. Whoever can top that will most likely win this game. A good battle awaits...
So we have witnessed another clinical performance from Afghanistan. They are outplaying Ireland with utmost ease, having all their bases covered. The hosts need to do something out of the blue if they are to keep the series alive. Join us for the 2nd ODI in Belfast on 29th August at 1045 Local (0945 GMT) to catch all the action. Till then, cheers!
Afghanistan captain, Asghar Afghan, says the first game of a series is important so is happy to win it. Credits his side's fielding in today's game. Reckons they didn't finish well in the death overs but plenty of positives to take and a lot to learn. Thanks the fans at the end of his interview for coming out and supporting the team.
Ireland captain, William Porterfield, says it was tricky but he's happy with how his side has performed. Feels they lost a few runs towards the end which he rues. Applauds Andy Balbirnie for playing well but is disappointed the rest couldn't chip in with partnerships. Admits there's plenty of work to be done. Reckons in the first 25-30 overs they were behind the pace in terms of fielding. Ends by saying they will try to do better in the next game.
Earlier, Gulbadin Naib and Hashmatullah Shahidi took the tourists to a decent total on a two-paced surface courtesy their half centuries. Their bowlers came to the party, with each one picking up a wicket at least. The fielders were on the money as well and took some good catches. Ireland have a lot of catching up to do in terms of every department. In terms of runs, 29 to be precise, this is Afghanistan's fourth closest win in ODIs. The Presentation is coming up in a while...
It was only Andy Balbirnie who applied himself and kept his side in the hunt, with a well-crafted fifty. He was involved in a run out though, Niall O'Brien being the victim. No other batsman stood out as the visitors kept on picking wickets at regular intervals. Gary Wilson hung in till the fag end but was not able to accelerate and the mounting run rate got the better of him.
A brilliant bowling performance from Afghanistan has seen them continue their domination over Ireland on this tour. However, the hosts' batsmen were themselves not proactive enough, didn't rotate the strike consistently and were not wise with their shot selections as well. The openers, William Porterfield and Paul Stirling, got off to starts but threw their wickets away.
Rashid Khan to Peter Chase. OUT! Caught and bowled! Afghanistan go 1-0 up in the 3-match series. Another flighted delivery outside off, Chase gets down to play the slog sweep but only top edges it high in the air. This one is tossed up outside off, Wilson gets down and slog sweeps it over mid-wicket! This is Wilson's first boundary as well! On his 45th ball. 39 needed from 24 balls. Tossed it outside off, Andy comes down the track and looks to go downtown. But he doesn't quite get to the pitch of the ball and skies it high in the air. Substitute Najibullah Zadran comes running in from long off and takes it comfortably. So the LBW shout which was denied in the previous over, does not make much of a difference.

Full and outside off, Wilson brings out his reverse sweep and deftly guides it through third man. Aftab Alam chases it down from backward point and gets to the ball, with a brilliant dive. Now, till this phase, the batsmen had taken two. But on seeing that effort, O'Brien goes for the third. Why? Because though the ball did not cross the ropes, Alam did. KOB thought there was that third on offer but Mujeeb Ur Rahman coming in from third man did the mop up and fired a good throw to the keeper who did the rest. Replays show that Kevin O'Brien is short. Well, that door now, is well ajar for the visitors.
Is Kevin O'Brien gone? Referred upstairs but KOB is walking back. Trouble, trouble, trouble.

DRINKS BREAK. Good, tight contest so far. Ireland have just been in it, thanks to the fight from Andy Balbirnie. But for them to win, the others need to contribute as well. This stand between Kevin O'Brien and Gary Wilson needs to be productive. As far as Afghanistan are concerned, once again, the spinners have bowled beautifully. Smart captaincy too. Out of the 14 overs remaining, 10 can be bowled by the trio of Mujeeb, Rashid and Nabi. Looks like the visitors have all their bases covered. He is ringing in the changes constantly. A change of ends for Mujeeb.

Gary Wilson walks in at number 7, replacing Balbirnie.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman to Andy Balbirnie. OUT! Taken at short fine leg! Mujeeb has delivered the much-needed breakthrough. And it is a big one too. That of the set Balbirnie. The carrom ball, full and outside off, Balbirnie gets down and attempts a paddle sweep. Initially it looks like he has cleared the fielder but Aftab Alam times his leap to perfection and takes it. Mujeeb stands over there with his arms aloft. That should open the door a bit more for the Afghans. Ireland now need 98 more from 97 balls.

Rashid Khan to Andy Balbirnie. HALF CENTURY FOR BALBIRNIE! A very important one at that. Ireland need him to be till the very end if they have to get anywhere close. Full and outside off, pushed through the covers for a single. This is the 6th half century for Balbirnie in ODIs. He has surpassed the 3-figure mark twice. Not a bad time to make it thrice.

Rashid Khan to Andy Balbirnie. Floated outside off, stroked to sweeper cover for a single.
Rashid Khan to Andy Balbirnie. What is happening? Once again Balbirnie's miscommunication could have resulted into a disaster. Full ball outside off, Andy squeezes it towards the left of backward point. He takes off initially but then puts his bat up to his partner. O'Brien turns but slips. Somehow he recovers as the throw from the fielder comes in towards Rashid. He loses a bit of balance and fails to collect it cleanly. Had he done so, Kevin might have been found wanting. Such silly mistakes can cost you games, the Irishmen need to learn quickly.
Rashid Khan to Andy Balbirnie. Driven towards the mid off region.

Rashid Khan to Kevin O'Brien. A strong shout for a caught behind falls on deaf ears! Quicker one outside off, O'Brien goes for the drive but seems to have missed it. Spotting the keeper go up, Khan starts appealing loudly too but to no effect. There was a noise which the on-air commentators inform us and that might have been of the bat hitting the pad.

Kevin O'Brien strides out to bat.
Mohammad Nabi to Simi Singh. OUT! Bowled 'em! The bowling change has resulted in favour of Afghanistan. The temptation must have been to give Rashid a longer run but sometimes unexpected changes bring you gifts. Nabi slows this one as he tosses it up around off, Simi Singh leans ahead gingerly in order to defend it but doesn't commit himself. Time for Drinks! Afghanistan continue to chip away at the wickets and have a strong grip on the game. Ireland are definitely not fancying the two-paced nature of the track. However, they only have themselves to blame as they have lost wickets to poor shot selections. They still need 167 from 186 balls. Need to keep rotating the strike or else the pressure will keep mounting on them. An absorbing passage awaits us.

So, he picks up the ball and flicks it back to the stumps as the batsman tries to amble in. The keeper is confident and it is referred upstairs. Well, the replays show that the southpaw didn't even try to ground his bat in, taking it so lightly but to his fortune, his right foot is just in when the bails come off.
