Kolkata, Aug 20 (PTI) The southern part of West Bengal, including Kolkata, experienced moderate to heavy rainfall on Thursday under the influence of a well-marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, the Met department said.

The low-pressure area lay over north interior Odisha and adjoining Jharkhand, it said.

Kolkata experienced continuous drizzle with intermittent sharp showers in between since Wednesday night. The city recorded 30 mm rainfall in 24 hours till 8.30 am, the weatherman said.

Contai in East Midnapore recorded the maximum rainfall in the state during the period at 160 mm, while the nearby seaside town of Digha recorded 74 mm rain, it said.

Other places in the state which received considerable rainfall are Diamond Harbour at 52 mm, Kalaikunda at 49 mm, Midnapore at 43 mm, Haldia at 41 mm and Darjeeling at 43 mm.

According to the weatherman, heavy to very-heavy rain is likely to occur till Friday in the south Bengal districts of East and West Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia and Jhargram.

A fresh low-pressure area is likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal on August 23, the Met department added.
