Berlin, Jul 17 (AP) Eight Vienna police officers have been suspended and prosecutors have launched an investigation after a video surfaced that appeared to show police beating a 28-year-old Chechen man in the Austrian capital last year.

Nina Bussek, a spokeswoman for Vienna prosecutors, told the Austria Press Agency Friday that an investigation is under way on suspicion of bodily harm and possible abuse of authority. The city's police force said it had suspended two officers suspected of direct involvement and another six who may have been indirectly involved.

The incident dates back to January 2019. The 28-year-old, whose name hasn't been released, said at the time that he had been beaten by police, but several police officers denied that and a slander investigation was opened against him. The latter was dropped after the video emerged this week.

Bussek said that “because of the video, it can no longer be surmised that he knowingly gave false statements against police.” Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said that the police behavior allegedly shown on the video was “absolutely unacceptable.” (AP)
