Sri Lanka vs South Africa Highlights And Cricket Score 5th Match - ODI Commentary

End of Over : 50.0 SL: 299/8

The target is a big one but the way South Africa have batted through out this series, they will fancy their chances. The wicket is a touch slow so their batting against the new ball will be key. Sri Lanka on the other hand will expect a lot from Akila as one would believe he would be the one getting the most assistance from the surface. Will the Proteas register the highest chase on this ground or will Sri Lanka finish this series on a high? Join us to find out.

The South African bowling was once again not up to the mark. Their pacers struggled with the new ball and leaked runs at the start. Maharaj though was the pick of the bowlers. He not only picked up the crucial wicket of Kusal Mendis but also applied the breaks on the scoring. The problem though was he lacked support. Rabada had a decent outing but one would expect more wickets from him. Dala too was on the expensive side. Mulder and Phehlukwayo did take two wickets each but they were taken for quite a few runs.

Post that partnership, Mathews got to his fifty and then put the foot on the accelerator. He started hitting boundaries at ease and he along with Thisara added the 4th 50-run partnership of the innings with Mathews scoring 37 of them. While the two were batting the hosts looked like they would cross 300. But it wasn't to be. The fall of the hard-hitting left hander and some tight overs in between helped the visitors crawl back into the game. But a handy cameo in the end by the hero of the last game, Dasun Shanaka, has taken the home side to a total which I believe is slightly above par.

After electing to bat, the openers got them off to a brisk start adding 50. Kusal Perera departed early but Kusal Mendis along with Dickwella stitched another fifty-run stand. Both departed after getting starts and with their departure the run rate also went down. De Silva and Mathews tough did take their time but their 53-run association laid the foundation for the big hitters to come.

An excellent batting performance led by the Sri Lankan skipper who was unfortunate not to get to a well-deserved ton has come to an end. He walks off to a standing ovation as Sri Lanka will surely be the happier of the two sides heading into the break.

49.6 W

That is it! South Africa are seen posing with the trophy. All smiles in their camp and they deserve all the applause they are getting from the crowd. Now the two teams will turn their attention to the shortest format which will be played on the 14th of August at 1900 local (1330 GMT). That is where the procession started as Reeza bagged a first ball duck and Klaasen to walked back cheaply. Duminy and de Kock tried to steady the ship but the former fell prey to another spinner, Dhananjaya de Silva. The visitors never recovered after that as the last 5 wickets fell for less than 40 runs. De Kock, their skipper, was fighting a lone battle with a half ton but lacked support.

After posting a target which I felt was above par, courtesy four 50 plus-run stands and an outstanding 96 from Mathews, the Lankans came out all guns blazing with the ball. Lakmal started things off with an absolute beauty, getting rid of Amla for nought. Markram and de Kock did try and counter-attack but the former's woes against spin continued as he fell prey to Akila.

An excellent batting performance has been followed up with an even better show with the ball. I did mention in my first innings text that with the wicket providing assistance to the spinners, Akila will hold the key and hasn't he delivered in some style! A 6-fer, he has ran through the battling line up of South Africa and helped Sri Lanka win quite comprehensively.
