Lucknow, November 27: Several people were injured after the police resorted to lathi-charge to quell a stone-pelting crowd which grew restive due to the late arrival of Bhojpuri actor Khesari Lal Yadav at an event in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki on Sunday. State cabinet minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi, MP Priyanka Singh Rawat, MLA Baijnath Rawat and other BJP leaders had to leave the Rampur Mahotsav mid-way due to the ruckus.

The mob started yelling when Khesari Lal Yadav got late. When he finally arrived at 10 pm, the crowd welcomed him by pelting stones and bricks at the stage. The police tried to pacify the crowd and the Bhojpuri started singing. However, the gathering again went out of control, forcing cops to resort to lathi-charge. The event turned out to be a flop show as Khesari Lal Yadav could not perform due to the commotion.

As the mob was pelting stones, chairs and bricks, political leaders had to leave the event to escape. The mob tried to target local legislator Upendra Rawat; however, the MLA was escorted to a safer place by the police. "People were hurling stones, chairs, bottles and bricks, after which the police resorted to lathi-charge," a witness told a local portal.
