Guwahati, Aug 5 (PTI) The number of people infected by the coronavirus in Assam crossed the 50,000-mark on Wednesday with 2,284 new infections, while the death toll reached 121 with six more fatalities, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The latest deceased include an 81-year old man from Kamrup Metropolitan district, two persons from Dibrugarh and one each from Tinsukia, Cachar and Darrang, the Minister said in a tweet.

"Glad that our positivity rate is just 3.86 per cent!", the Minister tweeted.

The total positive cases have now reached to 50,445, while the death toll due to COVID-19 is 121, Sarma said.
Among the new cases, 362 were reported from Kamrup Metropolitan, 177 from Dibrugarh, 157 from Nagaon and 123 from Kamrup Rural.
The total number of samples tested so far is 11,15,95 in 17 state-run and some outsourced laboratories.
Meanwhile, an Assam police personnel was also reported to have died due to COVID-19 infection but this has not been included in the death tally provided by the Minister.
The Assam police said in a tweet that Bhuban Likson of Tinsukia police "made the supreme sacrifice in the fight against #COVID-19. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family".
Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta tweeted, "All necessary assistance will be provided to the family of our brave #CoronaWarrior, who made the supreme sacrifice".
So far, 2,009 Assam Police personnel have tested positive for the virus, of whom five have died, 1,413 have recovered and 546 have rejoined duty, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) G P Singh said.
Meanwhile, 1,471 patients recovered and got discharged from various hospitals on Wednesday.
"So many recovered patients in a day is indeed a result of great efforts by our medical teams", the Minister tweeted.
The state currently has 14,429 active patients, while 35,892 have been discharged and three migrated out of the state. PTI DG TIR TIR 08060051 NNNN that part. We had, you know, opener in both games, so we had to use a lot of pen guys.”
A shorter game can take less of a toll on a team's bullpen, and it also presents a chance for a dominant starter to shine.
“Sounds obvious, but everything happens faster. It's almost like one good way to look at it is the first inning becomes the third inning,” Reds manager David Bell said before Sunday's games.
“I remember in the minor leagues seeing a lot of pitching gems in the seven-inning games, so I think it's an opportunity for starting pitchers — to really from pitch one, you can see the end a little bit quicker.”
Sure enough, Cincinnati's Trevor Bauer threw a two-hit shutout in the second game against Detroit. But that effort took 2 hours, 36 minutes, and the opener was played in 2:25. That would feel short if it were a nine-inning game, but it wasn't like the Reds and Tigers just breezed through the day.
The Tigers have another doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday against St. Louis — if the Cardinals can play.
There was a time when doubleheaders were a constant presence in the majors. The Boston Braves played a record 46 of them in 1945, according to SportRadar. But last year, there were only 33 doubleheaders total, and the New York Yankees led the way with seven.
Now these seven-inning doubleheaders are a possibility every team should be prepared to face.
“We'll do our best when that's in front of us, try and win those games. Obviously, it's a little bit different,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.
“You know, it's hard to know how you attack those days until you're there and what the day before looked like, what the days coming up look like — who's on the mound those days? Those are all things you kind of factor in as you get closer. I don't know how much necessarily changed, other than it's a little bit different circumstances that we have to navigate.” (AP)
