Joe Root came and plundered the runs and also completed his half-century as England put 74 runs from the final 10 overs of their innings. Burns looked set for a hundred but fell to Roston Chase just 10 runs short of what could have been a magnificent century. England declared immediately and the Windies were set a target of 399 runs.
Broad came and started hitting. The left-hander hadn’t scored a half-century since 2017 but made merry of few looseners from Windies bowlers for his first Test fifty in three years. His innings of 62 from 45 deliveries with the help of nine boundaries and a maximum was also England’s third-fastest half-century in Test matches.
Broad smashed the Windies bowlers all around the park and reached his half-century in just 33 deliveries equaling the record set by Allan Lamb and Andrew Flintoff. Broad now has scored the joint-fastest Test fifty for England in 33 deliveries. Legendary all-rounder Ian Botham scored the two fastest half-centuries for England.
Malcolm Marshall was the fastest West Indian to take 200 wickets and got there in only 42 Test matches. Pakistan spinner Yasir Shah leads the overall list having taken only 33 Test matches to complete 200 Test wickets. Clarrie Grimmett (36), Ravi Ashwin (37), Dennis Lillee (38) and Waqar Younis (38) complete the top five in the elite list.
But it was Stokes again. Brooks and Blackwood completed a 100-run stand both half-centurions and were playing the final over before tea. Stokes had been bowling bouncers throughout the match with little success. He did this time and the partnership was broken with Blackwood gloving one and Buttler taking a blinder.
England finished Day 4 on 284/8 and with 170 runs lead having started on 15 for nought. But at one stage they looked like they could be getting more when captain Ben Stokes found regular boundaries and in the company of Zak Crawley was taking England towards a point of no defeat. Stokes (46) added 98 runs for the fourth wicket with Crawley.
West Indies added 267 runs to their overnight score of 51/1 to take a 114-run lead with opener Kraigg Brathwaite top-scoring for the hosts with 65 while wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich hit 61 to take the visitors past the 300-run mark. Captain Ben Stokes was the most successful bowler for with a four-wicket haul helping him complete 150 Test wickets.
Both teams will be rearing to return back into action after a wait of more than three months. West Indies beat England 2-1 in the last series they faced off. But that three-match series was played in the Caribbean Islands and West Indies haven’t beaten England away from home since 1988 and are chasing their first series win in 32 years.
