New Delhi, Oct 25 (PTI) The family members of the Dalit labourer who was lynched at the farmers' protest site at Singhu border met National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) chairman Vijay Sampla on Monday and urged him to ensure that they get justice.

Those who met Sampla included victim Lakhbir Singh's wife, three daughters, sister, father-in-law and brother-in-law.

Singh, who hailed from a village in Punjab's Tarn Taran district, was brutally killed earlier this month and his body strung to a barricade at the Singhu border with a hand chopped off and multiple wounds caused by sharp-edged weapons.

Sampla said that Singh's family members told the NCSC that they have not received any support from the Punjab government or any religious or social organisation even after two weeks of the incident.

"However, NCSC will ensure that the culprits are booked under the sections of the (Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) Prevention of Atrocities Act. Through this Act, the young daughters of Lakhbir Singh will get free education and money for living and the victim's mother will get a monthly pension. Compensation of at least Rs 8.25 lakh will be ensured," he said.

He added that he will summon civil administration and police officials to ensure the release of the compensation amount and financial aid to Singh's family.

According to an NCSC statement, Singh's sister told Sampla that some villagers and religious organisations are socially targeting their family and accusing them and her brother of sacrilege.

She said her brother was innocent and brutally murdered by the culprits, adding that her family wants justice.

Sampla said that those organisations and individuals who have given the call for boycotting the victim's family and those who are actually doing it will also be punished under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

In videos of the incident that went viral, the culprits and other people can be heard saying that Singh had disrespected a holy book of Sikhs, but in reality, no video has proven that he really did it, he said.

The Haryana Police has arrested four Nihang Sikhs in connection with Singh's killing.

The accused Nihangs had maintained that Singh was "punished" over the "desecration" of a holy book.
