Chennai, Jul 10 (PTI) Karnataka defeated Central Board of Direct Taxes 2-1 on the opening day of the 96th All India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament here on Thursday.

After a goal-less first half, Rahul C. G. opened scoring for Karnataka in the 45th minute.

Bharath Mahalingappa increased the tally in the 52nd minute, again through a penalty corner.

Pranam Gowda scored in the 56th minute via a penalty corner for Taxes, but Karnataka held firm to secure the win.

Earlier, Rohan Patil put the Maharashtra ahead in the 22nd minute with a penalty corner conversion against Tamil Nadu.

The visiting team held the lead until the 42nd minute when Tamil Nadu equalised through BP Somanna, who slammed home from a penalty corner.
