Aamir Khan and his film, Dangal, PK and Secret Superstar, have shown how big of a market China is for Indian movies. All the three movies did stupendous business in the country, especially Dangal. The movie turned out to be India's highest grossing movie worldwide and the first to cross Rs 2000 crore WW, mostly through the business it did in China. It also remains the highest grossing non-Hollywood movie in China. Bolstered by the success of Aamir Khan movies, other Indian movies have also managed to find a release. Though not getting the monumental success of Dangal, films like Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Irrfan Khan's Hindi Medium did decent business.

However, the rule is not steadfast - not all Indian movies need to work in China. Baahubali 2, which did tremendous business in India, failed to create a flutter in China. And it looks like even Salman Khan's Sultan is going the same way. After much hype, the YRF-produced wrestling drama, also starring Anushka Sharma, has released in China on August 31. However, the movie has a disappointing start there.

As per trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the movie has collected $940,000, which amounts to Rs 6.66 crore. On the other hand, Bajrangi Bhaijaan had collected $2.25 million on its first day.

Seeing how Baahubali 2 and Sultan has been received there, we can only deduce one thing. If your film doesn't have an Aamir Khan and has planned a China release, it should be a heartwarming human drama with a social message like BB and Hindi Medium. Unfortunately, Baahubali 2 is perceived as a fantasy action drama, while Sultan is more of self-centric sports drama. It is not 100% true as always, as even Akshay Kumar's Toilet - Ek Prem Katha failed to meet expectations.
