Mumbai, July 3: Birla group patriarch and business tycoon Basant Kumar Birla, popularly known as BK Birla, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, at the age of 98 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Birla is survived by his daughters Manjushree Khaitan and Jayshree Mohta. His son Aditya Vikram Birla died in 1995.

With more than seven decades of experience in business, he was one of the most celebrated industrialists. Born on 1921, January 12, the nonagenarian industrialist was the chairman of BK Birla Institute of Engineering and Technology (BKBIET), the Krishnarpan Charity Trust, and various educational trusts and institutes.

He also established Birla College of Arts, Science & Commerce in Mumbai's Kalyan and Birla Public School in Qatar. Basant Kumar was the youngest son of industrialist Ghanshyam Das Birla. He entered the business world at the age of 15 by taking over the business of Kesoram Industries. He had also authored several books, including an autobiography Svantah Sukhaya.
