British-born Sikh army officer Preet Chandi, who is also known as 'Polar Preet' has become the first woman of colour to complete a solo expedition to the South Pole. The 32-year-old Army officer and physiotherapist has spent the past few months skiing solo and unassisted across Antarctica. Captain Harpreet Chandi began her expedition on November 7, 2021. She embarked on her Antarctica tour by battling temperatures of minus 50 degrees Celsius and wind speeds of up to 60mph. Chandi's only contact with the outside world was via a daily check-in with her support team, and her first post was dedicated to her late grandfather.
