Raipur, December 11: Counting of votes in Raipur district has started in Chhattisgarh, which went to polls in the recently contested Assembly elections 2018. The poll battle in these six constituencies – Bindranawagarh, Sihawa, Kurud, Dhamtari, Sanjari Balod, Dondi Lohara – is primarily wedged between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and the BSP-Janata Congress alliance. Bindranawagarh (ST): For this reserved seat, both BJP and Congress have changed their candidates. BJP has replaced the sitting lawmaker Govardhan Singh Manjhi with Dhamrudhar Pujari, while Congress has fielded Sanjay Netam, instead of Janak Dhruw. Sihawa (ST): For this seat too, both BJP and Congress have replaced their old candidates with skilled postgraduates. BJP has replaced their sitting MLA Shrawan Markam with Pinky Shivraj Shah, while Congress has given the ticket to Dr Laxhmi Dhruw instead of Ambika Markam. Janta Congress has fielded Shantanu Som, while AAP has given the ticket to Akbar Mandavi.
Kurud: Here, the BJP candidate is the sitting MLA Ajay Chandrakar. The prime challenger is Congress leader is Laxmikanta Sahu, replacing Lekhram Sahu who lost to Chandrakar in 2013 by over a margin of 25,000 votes. BSP has given the ticket to Kanhaiya Sahu, while AAP is testing the ground by fielding Tejendra Kumar.
Dhamtari: In this constituency, a trilateral contest is expected between the ruling BJP, the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Congress has fielded its sitting MLA Gurumukh Singh Hora against BJP’s Ranjana Dipendra Sahu, who has replaced Inder Chopra. Ajit Jogi’s Janta Congress has fielded Digvijay Singh Kridutt from this seat, while AAP has fielded Shatrughan Singh Sahu.
Sanjari Balod: From this constituency, Congress has fielded Sangeeta Sinha instead of sitting MLA Bhaiyaram Sinha against BJP’s Pawan Kumar Sahu, instead of Pritam Sahu. Arjun Singh Hirwani is testing his fate on Janta Congress ticket, while Kamini Dhurve is contesting on AAP ticket.
Dondi Lohara (ST): For this reserved seat, Congress has repeated its sitting candidate Anila Bhendiya, while BJP had replaced Horilal Rawate with Lal Mahendra Singh Tekam. Janta Congress has given the ticket to Rajesh Kumar Churendea, while AAP has fielded Yugal Kishor Ratre.
The counting of votes is expected to conclude in the next few hours, with the Election Commission of India scheduled to declare the final results by the end of the day. In case of a BJP victory, Dr Raman Singh would continue to remain the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. If the Congress succeeds in routing the saffron camp, the party is expected to take a cautious decision on choosing the CM, while BSP-Janata Congress Alliance might choose Ajit Jogi as their CM candidate.
