Farooq Abdullah's Sister Suraiya And Daughter Safiya Detained During Agitation Against Article 370 Repeal

Several women, including female members of Farooq Abdullah and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Justice Bashir Ahmed Khan's families, were detained during protests against ending the state's special status on Tuesday.

Srinagar, October 15: Several women, including female members of National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Justice Bashir Ahmed Khan's families, were detained during a protest against the Centre's move of withdrawing the state's special status granted Article 370. Those who were detained include Farooq Abdullah's sister Suraiya Abdullah, his daughter Safiya Abdullah Khan and Hawa Bashir, wife of Bashir Ahmed Khan. Article 370 Repeal: After Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah And Mehbooba Mufti Detained Under Public Safety Act.

"On August 5, we were locked inside our homes and Article 370 was abrogated. This is a marriage by compulsion which won't work," Suraiya Abdullah told reporters. The protesters were carrying placards which read, 'Kashmiri brides not for sale', 'Why downgrade Jammu and Kashmir state'. "We want to know the fate of those who have been detained, that's why we are protesting," Muslim Jan, an academician, told IANSOmar Abdullah Works Out at Gym And Watches Hollywood Movies in Detention, Mehbooba Mufti Confines Herself to Books.

A statement was also released by women protesters who said: "We the women of Kashmir disapprove of the unilateral decision taken by government of India to revoke article 370 and 35A and downgrade the status of Jammu and Kashmir." On Agust 5, the Parliament scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir granted under Article 370 and passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act which bifurcates the state into two union territories.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration in September had informed the Supreme Court that Farooq Abdullah has been put under house arrest at his Srinagar residence as PSA was slapped against him. Farooq's son and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is detained in Hari Niwas. Farooq's brother and senior National Conference leader Mustafa Kamal has been detained at his home.
