The former Manchester United forward made an impact on his return to England in Barcelona colours, helping the Catalan giants get off to a victorious start in their UEFA Champions League 2025-26 campaign. Barcelona had entered this match on the back of a massive 6-0 win over Valencia in La Liga 2025-26.

Marcus Rashford is set to join La Liga champion FC Barcelona on a loan deal with an option to buy from Manchester United. It has been reported that a verbal agreement has taken place and Barcelona are making arrangements for a medical test in the coming days for the star footballer.

Rashford, who hasn't played for England for a year, was selected as the 27-year-old forward has impressed since joining Aston Villa on loan from Manchester United in January. The 34-year-old Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson, who has been absent from the England squad since November of 2023, is also included in games against Albania and Latvia.

After Leon Bailey put Villa ahead, Rashford had an excellent chance to double Villa's lead on the break in the 10th minute from a tight angle but his effort was blocked by goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. Rashford was replaced by Marco Asensio in the 64th minute.

Rashford was a prominent figure in the red side of Manchester, often a regular starter under various managers before Ruben Amorim's arrival. Since the managerial change and the shift in United's playing style, Rashford struggled to secure a spot in the starting XI.

Mateta's goals came in the 64th and 89th minutes. United has lost seven of its first 13 home games in the Premier League this season and that hasn't happened since the 1893-94 season, according to the competition's statistic supplier, Opta. Five of those defeats have come in the last six home matches under Amorim.

The England international is currently earning around 350,000 pounds per week at Old Trafford, where his contract is not due to expire until June 2028. The report further stated that Villa will cover 70 per cent of his wages, while the loan package will include bonuses for progressing in Europe and for qualifying for the Champions League again next season.

Out-of-favor Rashford has not played for his hometown club since Dec. 12 and seems firmly out in the cold under the United manager after again not making the squad for the 1-0 win at Fulham in the Premier League. Amorim went as far as saying that 63-year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital is more likely to gain minutes than the England forward.

Alongside AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund are hoping to sign him on a season-long loan. A deal similar to what the German club had struck with United for Jadon Sancho in the 2023/24 season. Rashford has not featured for the side since December 1 when he scored a brace in the 4-0 win against Everton, which was Amorim’s first league win at the club.
