Guwahati (Assam) [India], Sep 16 (ANI): The Assam Police on Sunday arrested two individuals found to be having links with suspected Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist -Qamar-uz-Zaman, who was arrested from Kanpur on Thursday.
The two, identified as Saidul Alam and Omar Farooq, were arrested following an interrogation with Zaman. Another close aide of Zaman - Shahnawaz Alam - was arrested by the Assam Police on Saturday.
On September 13, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Kanpur police jointly arrested Zaman from Chakeri area of Kanpur, who was reportedly planning an attack during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
"Qamar-uz-Zaman was arrested in Kanpur. Following an interrogation, three people have been arrested. The three- Shahnawaz Alam, Saidul Alam and Omar Farooq are also being interrogated. We have discovered that they have links to Qamar-uz-Zaman," said Deepak Kumar, Uttar Pradesh's Inspector General (Law and Order).
"There have been a few terror activities in Assam in the recent past. Some time ago, a person related to Harkat-ul-Mujahideen was arrested. Activities of Bangladesh-based Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen was also noted some time ago," he added.
According to the UP Police, Zaman, a 37-year-old resident of Assam, was in the city to identify targets for a terrorist incident. The police have also recovered a video from his mobile featuring images of a Kanpur temple.
Following the interrogation by the UP police, Zaman confessed to being an active member of Hizbul Mujahideen and accepted that he was in Kanpur for preparations of a terror attack. (ANI)
