Thiruvananthapuram, July 26: Renowned poet and translator of Malayalam literature Attoor Ravi Verma passed away on Friday, July 26. He died at the age of 88 years. He was being treated at a private hospital in Thrissur for pneumonia. Considered as a pioneer of Malayalam poetry, Ravi Verma is a recipient of Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award as well as Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry.

He has also been honoured with Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary award by Kerala government. His poems ignored the metre and used free verse. Ravi Verma has written three anthologies of poems and even translated some novels from Tamil to Malayalam.

Going back to his life, he hails from Thrissur village. Ravi Verma was expelled from the college for his involvement in left-wing politics. He completed his studies from Malabar Christian College and the University College, before working in Chennai's Presidency College as a teacher.

He later returned to Kerala and continued teaching at the Brennen College in Thalassery. He thought the likes of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Law Minister A. K. Balan.
