Mumbai, Sep 24: Price of petrol went beyond the psychological Rs 90 per litre mark in Mumbai, touching new hieghts on Monday. After a new increase of 11 paise, petrol is being sold at Rs 90.08 for a litre in Mumbai. Besides Mumbai, petrol is being sold for over Rs 90 per litre in more than 12 cities of Maharashtra. Below is the list of cities where petrol prices have gone beyond Rs 90 mark.

Prabhani in Maharashtra was the first city where petrol price went beyond Rs 90 in the country. Petrol is being sold at Rs 91.89 in the city on Monday. The state government charges 25 per cent value-added tax (VAT) on petrol in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and 26 per cent in the rest of the state, which is the main cause of higher cost in the state than the rest of the country. The transportation cost of fuel is another factor behind higher prices. Petrol Price Crosses Rs 90 Mark in Mumbai After Fresh Hike in Fuel Rates.

There has been a steep rise in prices of petrol and diesel since the past few weeks. Keeping the people’s suffering in mind, the West Bengal government on September 11 reduced the excise on petrol and diesel by Re 1 per litre each last week. Similarly, the Karnataka government had also announced that the petrol and diesel prices across the state would be cheaper by Rs 2 per litre each, following the reduction in cess on these fuels. However, the central government has ruled out any reduction in the excise duty on petrol and diesel for now.
