Australia vs England Highlights And Cricket Score 2nd Match - ODI Commentary
'Never judge a pitch till both the sides have bowled on it,' goes the saying. True. But in this case, Australia are well, well short. They are short of runs, short of fit bowlers, short of self-confidence... they might need to bowl really well to even make a match out of this. Join us back at 1735 local (0735 GMT) for the second session.
Once again, England have done well with the ball. Yes, the field is big and the outfield not the quickest but the bowling was excellent. They have found ways to stall Australia even when the latter were going strong. Joe Root started the collapse, if one might add, for Australia. He dismissed Steven Smith and Travis Head in quick succession and that left the hosts struggling to score quickly. Rashid then broke the 85-run stand between Finch and Marsh, getting the latter and Stoinis in the space of 6 balls. Towards the end, the seamers were excellent, not giving anything away.
This innings almost was a replica of the previous match. Just a slight difference being the openers providing a decent start. Aaron Finch once again failed to make his century count, Smith and Marsh could not convert their starts and then some decent hitting at the death saving their face. My colleague KingVic sums it up correctly - Australia are about 80 runs short.
Disappointing performance from Australia again. They were 161/3 in 30 overs and going by David Lloyd's theory, teams usually double that by the 50-over mark. At least, with those many wickets left. But they have managed just 109 runs in the last 20 overs, losing 6 wickets. If we dissect further, just 57/5 in the last 10.
Chris Woakes to Andrew Tye. OUT! A run out to end the innings. A short ball around off, nicely taking the pace off, Tye looks to pull but is cramped for room. gets a bottom edge onto his body and the ball rolls to the leg side. The batsmen go for the single but Woakes quickly gets to the ball, turns around, takes aim and bang. Hits the stumps at the bowler's end. AUSTRALIA END ON 270/9.
Chris Woakes to Andrew Tye. SIX! BOSH! A number 10 hits a six! Just the third of the innings, after Finch and Smith hit one each. A full toss on middle, Tye swings it cleanly over long on and just about clears the leaping fielder!
Chris Woakes to Andrew Tye. Another short ball outside off, Andrew swings hard but misses.
Chris Woakes to Andrew Tye. A short ball outside off, Tye pulls it over mid-wicket for a couple.
Chris Woakes to Cameron White. Full and outside off, hit through mid on for a single.
Andrew Tye walks in at number 10, replacing Starc.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Starc. OUT! Caught this time. And the fielder is Jason Roy. A length ball on middle and leg, Starc backs away and swings it over mid-wicket. Again, he does not have enough on it and finds the fielder at mid-wicket near the fence. Hang on... Roy misjudges it too! However, he adjusts well, running back late and just about taking it near his head.
Mark Wood to Mitchell Starc. DROPPED! What happened there? Did the sun get into Root's eyes? Somehow, he has missed a fairly simple chance. A short ball, on middle, Starc pulls this over mid-wicket. It looks a good hit but this ground is so big that it does not have enough legs to travel beyond the fielder at the boundary. Joe Root runs to his right, but then perhaps does not see the ball clearly. Because he overruns it. He then sticks out his left hand, perhaps because he sees the ball at the last moment. Prevents what would have been an embarrassing six. Just a single.
Mark Wood to Cameron White. A short ball around off, Cameron pulls it through mid-wicket for one more.
Mark Wood to Mitchell Starc. Another one on the hips, Mitchell tucks it through square leg and White looks for two but Starc shouts, 'NO! NO! NO!' Just a single then.
Mark Wood to Cameron White. Another pull, just one.
Mark Wood to Mitchell Starc. Down the leg side, Starc backs away and works it through square leg for a run.
Mark Wood to Cameron White. A short ball on middle, pulled away through square leg for a single.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Starc. Punched off the back foot by the batsman. Terrific over - 1, 0, 0, W, 0, 0.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Starc. Down the leg side, Starc misses his tuck and the ball goes off his pads towards short third man.
Mitchell Starc comes in.
Chris Woakes to Cameron White. OUT! The dive has not saved Carey! That is why you should play other sports as well. Football has helped Woakes in cricket. On a length outside off, White looks to pull but gets a thick inside edge onto his body. Carey calls for the single but has to run around Woakes as the bowler too dashes for the ball. Kicks it onto the stumps and Carey dives. It is referred upstairs but replays show that it is not enough. Australia still in with a shout to get bowled out before the 300th legal ball.
Direct hit! Has Carey timed his dive to perfection?
Chris Woakes to Cameron White. Backs away to the leg side a year in advance and Woakes bowls it wide outside off. The Bear cannot reach.
Chris Woakes to Cameron White. Gets across his stumps and Woakes bowls it on middle, White looks to swing it over the keeper but misses. Seems like the ball hits his pads but England appeal for the catch. Not given.
Chris Woakes to Alex Carey. On middle and leg, worked through mid-wicket for a single.
Chris Woakes is back on.
Mark Wood to Alex Carey. Walks down the track and works it through mid-wicket for a single.
Mark Wood to Alex Carey. A short ball on middle, Carey backs away and looks to pull but misses. Seemed like a slower one, but dear me, the speed gun says 141.8 kph!
Mark Wood to Cameron White. The batsman plays a pull shot to this short delivery. The batsmen have run through for a single.
Mark Wood to Alex Carey. Banged in short, pulled away for a run.
Mark Wood to Cameron White. A short ball, delivered from wide of the crease, White looks to pull but is cramped for room. Gets a bottom edge through mid-wicket and it is a single.
Mark Wood to Cameron White. Full and outside off, driven sweetly through the covers for a couple.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. FOUR! Lovely shot. Full and outside off, Carey reaches out and lofts it over covers for a boundary! That is 11 from the over and the last 2 have spoilt the figures for Rashid. He ends with 10-0-71-2, with 23 coming off the last 2.
Adil Rashid to Cameron White. Driven towards the mid off region. They pick up a single.
Adil Rashid to Cameron White. Comes down the track, but is not to the pitch of the ball. Defends it to the off side.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. Short and on the stumps, Alex punches it towards point and sets off for the quick run. The fielder gets to the ball and has a shy at the bowler's end but misses. Would have been tight.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. FOUR! BOOM! Full and outside off, Carey gets down and slog sweeps it over mid-wicket for a boundary!
Adil Rashid to Cameron White. Full and outside off, White reverse paddles it through short third man for a single.
Mark Wood to Cameron White. Works this through mid-wicket and gets one. Just 4 from this over.
Mark Wood to Alex Carey. On middle and leg, flicked through mid-wicket for a run.
Mark Wood to Alex Carey. On middle and leg, pushed back to the bowler. Another dot.
Mark Wood to Cameron White. The ball has found the edge of the bat. They pick up a single.
Mark Wood to Alex Carey. The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot. The batsmen have run through for a single.
Mark Wood to Alex Carey. On middle and leg, pushed back to the bowler.
Mark Wood is back.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. Punched off the back foot by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single. 12 from the over, some momentum for the Aussies.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. WIDE. Well played from Carey. He stands outside leg, sees the ball outside leg, then calmly gets across, shouldering arms.
Adil Rashid to Cameron White. Now White shows how the reverse sweep is played but how good a fielding is that from Buttler? The ball bounces onto the pitch but Buttler sticks his right leg out and just deflects the ball towards the off side. Just a run, when it could have been many more. 'He has saved a goal!' says Michael Clarke on air.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. Now he goes for the reverse sweep but due to the extra bounce, the ball goes off his gloves, just past Jos Buttler. Seemed like there was two available as Chris Woakes had a fairly decent ground to cover from short third man. But only a single taken.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries for Carey! Rashid floats this around leg and this time the southpaw paddles it fine past the keeper!
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. FOUR! Better shot from Carey. Uses his big reach, gets down to the pitch of the ball and sweeps it through square leg for a boundary.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. Landed outside off, it is the googly and it has bamboozled Carey. Tamely pushes inside the line and is beaten.
Liam Plunkett to Cameron White. And a forward defense to end the over. Terrific over from Plunkett. So far, Australia have scored 8/2 in 3 Powerplay 3 overs.
Liam Plunkett to Alex Carey. On middle and leg, another one goes off the inner half of the bat through mid-wicket. This time for a single.
Liam Plunkett to Alex Carey. Another dot. Full on middle and leg, pushed off the inner half of the bat straight back to the bowler.
Liam Plunkett to Alex Carey. Outside off, punched straight to point.
Liam Plunkett to Alex Carey. WIDE. Full and down the leg side, Carey misses his flick.
Liam Plunkett to Alex Carey. No run there again. Pushed back to the bowler.
Liam Plunkett to Alex Carey. Outside off, punched through the covers but straight to the fielder.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. Now he gets the sweep right and earns a single through square leg. 3 runs and a wicket from that over.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. Full and outside off, Alex looks to sweep but misses and is hit on the pads. Bounce.
Adil Rashid to Cameron White. Now the paddle from White and he earns a run.
Adil Rashid to Alex Carey. And he is away first ball. Outside of, Carey goes back and just opens the face of his bat to guide it to short third man for a single.
Time for one of the debutants. Alex Carey walks in at number 8, with Australia under threat of being bowled out. Forget 350, they may just scrape past 250.
Adil Rashid to Marcus Stoinis. OUT! That is a terrific catch! Jos Buttler dropped a tough one earlier in the day but this is a magnificent take. Tossed up outside off, Stoinis stays leg side of the ball and looks to drive this inside out but the ball turns away just a shade and takes a thin outside edge. Buttler collects it cleanly and does not even bother to whip the bails, as is a normal keeper's habit. He then appeals and up goes the umpire's finger! The Aussies have now lost 3 wickets for 7 runs in the last 13 balls!
Adil Rashid to Marcus Stoinis. Full on middle, pushed straight back.
Liam Plunkett to Marcus Stoinis. Punched off the back foot by the batsman. They pick up a single.
Liam Plunkett to Marcus Stoinis. Around off, watchfully defended.
Liam Plunkett to Cameron White. Played through mid-wicket by the batsman. They pick up a single.
Liam Plunkett to Cameron White. WIDE. Down the leg side again, this time it is wided as White gets across.
Liam Plunkett to Cameron White. Gets across his stumps and Plunkett ducks in a bouncer on middle, the Bear then ducks.
Liam Plunkett to Cameron White. The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
Cameron White eventually walks out at a bat. Not quite the position for him, IMHO.
Liam Plunkett to Aaron Finch. OUT! Perfect. Following the template to the 'T'. Score quickly in the Mandatory Powerplay, then slow down, jog across to a ton and then throw it away. Aaron Finch does it time and again. Full on middle and off, the intention is correct from Finch, looking to go over the top but perhaps he could have waited an over or two. Marsh was just dismissed. And now Australia have lost 2 in quick succession. Plunkett wraps his fingers around the ball and as a result, it comes on much slower than Finch's anticipation. He is through with his lofted shot pretty early and the ball goes off the inner half of the bat, straight to Jason Roy at mid on. He escaped a similar chance a few overs go when he cleared mid on. Still, for the numbers, a good score by Finch. He has made a century, but might still find his team on the losing side. Meanwhile, PLUNKETT HAS GOT TO 100 ODI WICKETS.
POWERPLAY 3 time. 5 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle till the end of the innings.
Adil Rashid to Marcus Stoinis. Full and down the leg side, paddled fine for a couple. Having conceded 19 in his first 2 overs, this has been an excellent comeback from Rashid. Just 26 in his last 5.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. Fullish, on middle, swept through the leg side for a single.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. On middle and leg, flicked through mid-wicket.
Adil Rashid to Marcus Stoinis. Gets off the mark straightaway, with a tuck through the leg side for a single.
Marcus Stoinis finally comes out to bat at number 6, replacing Marsh. Stoinis recently made a 99 against the Brisbane Heat, playing for Melbourne Stars in the BBL, at this very ground.
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Marsh. OUT! Stumped by a mile. Marsh jumps down the track, perhaps giving the signal in 2017 and Rashid is quick to spot that. Slows the flight, gives it a bit more loop, throws the ball wide outside off and Marsh misses his swing. Buttler does not miss the ball behind and comfortably takes the bails off. Another start not converted by Marsh and this could be dangerous for Australia. They would have wanted him at the crease in the death overs. End of a good stand but not necessarily devastating for England.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. Outside off, pushed to the off side for a quick single.
Liam Plunkett to Mitchell Marsh. Outside off, tapped to the off side. Mitchell wants a single but Jos Buttler quickly gets to the ball and the batsman is sent back.
Liam Plunkett to Mitchell Marsh. FOUR! Not quite hit well but he has got enough. A short ball, Marsh goes back and heaves it in the air, wide of the man running to his left from deep mid-wicket and into the fence.
Liam Plunkett to Aaron Finch. On off, worked through mid-wicket for a single. The stand is now worth 80 from 90 balls.
Liam Plunkett to Aaron Finch. Aaarggghhhh! That is the grunt from Plunkett as soon as he delivers the ball. It is angled down the leg side and Finch misses his flick. Wide called.
Liam Plunkett to Aaron Finch. Excellent running. Full on middle, AF flicks it through mid-wicket and runs hard for the second.
Liam Plunkett to Aaron Finch. Full and wide outside off, Aaron swings hard but misses.
Liam Plunkett to Aaron Finch. Outside off, Finch mistimes his cut towards point. Gets a bottom edge. Wants the run but is sent back.
Liam Plunkett is back on.
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Marsh. Short and outside off, punched behind point for a couple. 200 UP FOR AUSTRALIA! They need at least another 150 from the remaining 12 overs.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot. One run added to the total.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. Full on middle, pushed to the bowler.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. 10th ODI ton for Finch, 5th against England! Equals Ricky Ponting's tally of tons against England, most by an Aussie! Down the leg side, Finch works this through square leg, calls for two and then makes Mitchell Marsh run hard for the second. What a glorious week for the opener. Struggled in the Big Bash to no end and here, two matches, two centuries. Takes his helmet off, shows off that chewing gum, then raises his arms in celebration. Australia would want a win tonight and hope for him to continue.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. Another dot. Finch flicks it, but straight to short mid-wicket.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. Full and down the leg side, there comes the paddle and again, it is straight to short fine leg.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Marsh. Defended off the back foot by the batsman.

Chris Woakes to Mitchell Marsh. A short ball on middle, pulled away for a single.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Marsh. The batsman has driven it straight down the ground.
Chris Woakes to Aaron Finch. The batsman fails to get bat on that one and is hit on the pad. They pick up a single. Leg bye given by the umpire.

Some issue with the ball. Morgan shows it to the umpire and the latter cuts off the leather.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. The batsman works it down the leg side. They pick up a single.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. Full on middle, another sweep, straight to short fine leg.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. FOUR! Better shot from Finch and he finds the boundary! Full and on middle, Finch gets down and sweeps it powerfully through mid-wicket. There are two men in the deep, one from square leg and the other at mid-wicket, both come, the latter dives but cannot stop the ball!
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. Full and down the leg side, Finch paddles it away but straight to short fine leg. That man has been very handy today. Not even conceded a single run.
Adil Rashid to Mitchell Marsh. Now the drive through mid off for a run.
Adil Rashid to Aaron Finch. Full on middle, pushed through mid on for a single.
Chris Woakes to Aaron Finch. The batsman plays a pull shot to this short delivery. The batsmen have run through for a single.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Marsh. A short ball on middle, pulled away for a single.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Marsh. Interesting awareness! Mitchell pushes it to the off side and then is just about to pick the ball and hand it to the keeper. But then realizes that recently, in the Under-19 World Cup, a South African batsman had done the same. The fielding side, Windies, had appealed then and he was adjudged out! Marsh then withdraws his hand.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Marsh. The batsman was beaten and missed the line of the delivery.
Chris Woakes to Aaron Finch. On middle and leg, worked through the leg side for a run.
Chris Woakes to Mitchell Marsh. Full and outside off, driven straight back for a single.

Chris Woakes into the attack now.
Joe Root to Aaron Finch. Full and down the leg side, Aaron looks to sweep but misses and is hit on the pads. There is an appeal for LBW but it is so bad that even the umpire smiles. Pitched MILES outside leg.
Joe Root to Mitchell Marsh. A tad short on middle, flicked through mid-wicket for one more.

Joe Root to Mitchell Marsh. Full again, eased down to long on for a single.
Joe Root to Mitchell Marsh. Full on off, pushed back to the bowler.
Joe Root to Mitchell Marsh. FOUR! Not quite where he intended. Short and outside off, Marsh goes back to cut but gets a thickish outside edge which flies just wide of short third man, through backward point and meets the ropes. That is 6 off the first 3 balls, giving Morgan something to think about.
Joe Root to Aaron Finch. Fuller, around off, calmly tucked through square leg for a run.
Joe Root to Mitchell Marsh. Short and outside off, Marsh goes back and punches this down to long off for a single.
Moeen Ali to Mitchell Marsh. Outside off, punched away for a run.

Moeen Ali to Aaron Finch. Driven through mid on by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single.
Moeen Ali to Aaron Finch. Put down! Was there an edge? Hot Spot picks it! Excellent bowling from Moeen. He slows this beautifully through the air, around off and gets it to spin in. Finch looks to work it through the leg side but misses. Initially, it seems like it has gone off the pads to Buttler who struggles to collect but nope...
Moeen Ali to Aaron Finch. SAFE! So looks were not deceptive in this case. Finch works this through the leg side and takes the single. He then comes back for the second, more so on the insistence of Marsh. The latter seems to be slow and the throw comes in to Moeen who whips the bails off. Ahh... replays slow that Moeen has beaten Marsh... in being the slower one. Marsh was short but Moeen was very slow in taking the bails off. Perhaps he was a shade too far from the stumps. Just in, is Marsh.
Ho ho ho! A run out appeal now! Is Marsh gone? He seems confident... Moeen does not look excited... but looks are not everything...
Moeen Ali is back on. Joe Root is done perhaps, for the innings.
Joe Root to Mitchell Marsh. The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. 3-0-9-2 for Root. Lovely bowling.
Mitchell Marsh comes in now. Australia in trouble right to their roots.
Joe Root to Travis Head. OUT! Soft dismissal! Head, well, has not quite used his surname on this ball. Perhaps a bit harsh, but then you should not be coming down the wicket if you are not confident of playing spin. Comes down the track and tamely pushes it back to the bowler. A simple catch. Nothing ball, nothing shot. Waste of a wicket and time.
Joe Root to Aaron Finch. On middle and leg, flicked through the leg side for a single.
Joe Root to Aaron Finch. FOUR! Nicely done. Landed outside off, dabbed to short third man for a boundary!

Liam Plunkett to Travis Head. On middle and leg, clipped through mid-wicket for a couple.
Liam Plunkett to Travis Head. Full and outside off, driven straight to the man at short cover. Nearly carried!
Liam Plunkett to Travis Head. On a length outside off, Head works it off the inner half of the bat through square leg. There is a direct hit at the striker's end and there is a muted appeal for a run out. Has Head done a Hardik Pandya by not grounding his bat? Replays show that he did ground his bat. Recently, Pandya was run out in a Test match against South Africa by failing to ground his bat.
Joe Root to Travis Head. Full on middle, driven through mid off for a single. That over was done and dusted in 1 minute and 55 seconds! Whoosh!

Liam Plunkett to Aaron Finch. The batsman has flicked the ball off his pads. They pick up a single.
Liam Plunkett to Aaron Finch. Around off, defended solidly.
Joe Root to Travis Head. The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. Golden change from Morgan. The man with the golden arm has done it. 2 runs and the massive wicket of Smith.
Joe Root to Travis Head. Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
Travis Head comes out to the middle now.
Joe Root to Steven Smith. OUT! Umpire's call it is! Australia do not lose a review but does it matter? They have lost their best ODI batsman. Full and outside off, Smith comes forward and looks to flick but misses and is hit on the pads. That seems to be out and the umpire agrees, raising the finger slowly. Smith walks over to his partner and after some deliberation, takes the review. Well, Hawk Eye shows the ball to be clipping the top of leg stump which means Smith has to go. Another failure. England on top now, after stifling Australia and picking up two big wickets.
Smith is a goner! But he doesn't think so. He has taken a review against the LBW call. That looks dead.
Joe Root to Steven Smith. Around off, good bounce again, worked straight to short mid-wicket.
Joe Root to Aaron Finch. A touch shortish, the line is around off, Finch hops and works it through square leg for a run.
Joe Root to Steven Smith. On middle and leg, tucked through mid-wicket for a single.
Joe Root replaces Ali in the attack.
Liam Plunkett to Aaron Finch. Shortish and outside off, Finch chops it past backward point for a couple of runs.
Liam Plunkett to Steven Smith. Smith guides it to third man. The batsmen have run through for a single.
Liam Plunkett to Aaron Finch. 18th ODI fifty for Aaron Finch, fourth against England. He stroked a century in the last game and has carried his form into this game. Short and on middle, Aaron pulls it to deep square leg for one. Australia once again will be hoping for a big one from him.
Liam Plunkett to Steven Smith. Shortish and on off, punched to sweeper cover for one.
Liam Plunkett to Steven Smith. NOT OUT! No bat involved. It's a delivery landing on the shorter side outside off, Smith shuffled across to work it on the leg side but missed. It brushed his pads after going closely past the inside edge of his bat. The bowler appeals for an lbw while the keeper starts to appeal after catching the ball. Eoin Morgan has a chat with his keeper and then takes the DRS. The replays roll in and it finds no bat. They don't feel the need to check for the lbw which used to be a norm earlier. Anyway, the impact was outside off. England lose their only review.
Shout for an lbw followed by a caught behind! Not given and Eoin Morgan after consulting his keeper, takes the DRS. It's for the catch. Has Smith edged it?
Liam Plunkett to Steven Smith. Pitches it full and outside off, Steven Smith plays a flowing cover drive but finds the fielder inside the ring.
Liam Plunkett to Steven Smith. Wide! Lands it on a good length outside off, just outside the tramline, Smith allows it through and the umpire exercises his arms.
Liam Plunkett is back on.
Moeen Ali to Steven Smith. Uses his feet a little bit this time and whips it through the gap on the leg side. A single taken as the mid-wicket fielder in the deep does the fielding.

Toss - The coin toss goes in the favour of Steven Smith this time and AUSTRALIA ELECT TO BAT! They have a couple of new faces in their playing XI - Alex Carey and Jhye Richardson make ODI debuts, replacing unfit Tim Paine and rested Pat Cummins. Also, Cameron White makes a comeback after nearly 3 years as Adam Zampa misses out. England following the old mantra, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' and are going unchanged.
The Gabbatoir is all set to host the second ODI between Australia and England. The hosts were beaten black and blue in the last match and will be looking for a comeback today. As Steven Smith mentioned, the Aussies have enough quality in the squad but they need to start playing good cricket in this format. The tourists, on the other hand, will be relieved after registering their first success on this pretty dismal tour for them. It was a comprehensive win over the Kangaroos at the MCG and Eoin Morgan's boys will be aiming to repeat the same today. Hello and welcome everyone. We are expecting a cracking contest. Stay with us for all the updates.
That's it for today. England have made it look really easy just like they did in the last encounter. Australia, who have won just 1 ODI out of the last 8 they've played, will have to regroup and come up with a great performance to stay alive in the series. On the other hand, the visitors will not want to take the series till the very end and clinch the victory in the next game and bag the trophy. Join us for the third ODI on January 21, Sunday, from the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney at 1420 local (0320 GMT). Till then, goodbye and take care!
England captain - Eoin Morgan says he thought his players were exceptional. Joe Root bowling the way he did was marvelous and such good bowling put pressure on Australia. Reckons the chase was a bit tricky, but they did enough to get the job done. Adds that such situations make things more exciting. Continues saying that they take every game in their stride and try to do their best. Ends by saying that they have a level of trust and confidence in each other that somebody will put their hand up and get the job done.
Man of the Match, Joe Root says he didn't think he'd bowl 7 overs at the start of the day. States he enjoys getting wickets at the start of the innings, and seeing Steven Smith's back is always a pleasure. Mentions today's game as a great example, that as a one-day group they have to prove themselves and push for the upcoming World Cup. On Mitchell Marsh getting reverse swing against him, says it's important to keep your composure and back yourself in any kind of situation.
Australian captain - Steven Smith says after Aaron Finch's hundred they were in a good position but couldn't finish well in the death despite having wickets in hand. Mentions they lost a couple of wickets in a row with two new batsmen in the crease and that made things difficult. Adds somebody set had to stay in the middle but that didn't happen. On missing the experienced guys, he goes on to say that this is an opportunity for the new guys and Jhye Richardson in particular bowled really well. Will see how it goes in Sydney now. Feels the wicket didn't play the way they thought, bit different to the one they usually see. Ends by saying that they'll be treating the final three games as knockout games, so they'll try to play better cricket.
The Men in Yellow did not play like a team in this match. They got on board a score which was around 60-80 runs short and needed their bowlers to come in strong to defend it down. They never really got in the game apart from the quick breakthroughs provided by Richardson and Starc. Wickets at regular intervals was the need of the hour but none of them really stepped up. The home side felt the absence of a regular spinner. Comparing the two, England bowled 24 overs of spin as compared to just the 10 bowled by the Australians. Smith tried everything he had up his sleeve but could not save his side from going 2-0 down in the series.
What a win for the Englishmen. They chased down what looked to be a below par score without any trouble. Going into the run chase, they went on the back foot losing their in-form batsman Roy in the very first over. But Bairstow and Hales then steadied the ship by getting to their fifties and building a 117-run partnership. Morgan played a crucial knock in the middle and Root stayed unbeaten till the very end to play the anchoring role. England did find themselves in a spot of bother when they lost Buttler and Ali in quick succession, but Woakes applied the finishing touches with his Test captain and chased it down with ease.
