The nation is celebrating the Guru Nanak Jayanti today. This year commemorates the 549th birth anniversary of the first guru of Sikhs. The day is also known as Gurupurab and Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav. Sikhs, Sidhis and Hindus living in Punjab celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm. The Holy guru was born in the year 1469 in Rai Bhoi Ki Talvandi, presently known as Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. He was born to Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta. The holy saint spent his last years of life in Kartarpur.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated on the day of Kartik Purnima. The celebrations include decorating the Gurudwaras with flowers and lights. A day before the Guru Parv devotees take out a procession with a palanquin of the Granth and the Sikh flag. People also recite the hymns from the scriptures. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was a noble saint who spread the message of ‘God is One’. The holy saint believed in unity, goodness and selfless love.

On the occasion of the Guru Nanak Jayanti, thousands of Sikh Pilgrims from India visit Nankana Sahib and various other Gurudwaras in Pakistan.
