Washington DC, December 19: United States President Donald Trump was impeached by the US House of Representatives on Wednesday night for abusing his power and obstructing Congress, becoming only third American President after Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton to be formally charged under Constitution's remedy for serious crimes and misdemeanours. Reacting to the development, the White House said that it was confident that the US Senate would relieve Trump in a trail. White House Tweet:

"The President is confident the Senate will restore regular order, fairness, and due process, and will continue to work tirelessly to address the needs and priorities of the American people, as he has since the day he took office," she said.

Trump has called the whole affair of impeachment a "witch hunt", a "sham" and a "hoax". The articles of impeachment would now go the Senate for trial. The Senate is widely expected to acquit US President since conviction would require 67 votes in a chamber where Democratic Party and its allies hold 47 seats.
