Hyderabad, January 11: Telangana’s Drugs Control Administration (DCA) has issued an immediate “stop-use” alert after a toxic industrial chemical was detected in a batch of a commonly prescribed children’s medicine. The warning follows laboratory findings by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), which confirmed the presence of Ethylene Glycol in Almont-Kid Syrup, raising serious safety concerns.
The alert, issued on January 10, 2026, directs an instant halt on the sale, distribution, and use of the affected batch to prevent potential harm to children. All drug inspectors across the state have been instructed to remove the product from hospital pharmacies and retail outlets. What Is Ethylene Glycol Poisoning?
Ethylene Glycol is a highly toxic chemical used in antifreeze and brake fluids and is strictly prohibited in medicines. In some illegal manufacturing practices, it is substituted for safer pharmaceutical solvents due to its low cost. Once ingested, the body converts Ethylene Glycol into toxic acids. Poisoning typically progresses in stages:
• 0–12 hours: Dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness, slurred speech
• 12–36 hours: Rapid breathing, increased heart rate, worsening internal damage
• 24–72 hours: Acute kidney failure, which can be fatal without urgent treatment
Enforcement and Public Advisory
Following the CDSCO East Zone lab report from Kolkata, Telangana DCA Director General Shahnawaz Qasim ordered strict enforcement. The state has also strengthened oversight by mandating digital tracking of essential solvents used in drug manufacturing.
Parents and caregivers are advised to stop using the syrup immediately if they possess the affected batch, report it to the nearest drug control office, and seek emergency medical care if any unusual symptoms appear in children.
