Hyderabad, Jul 25 (PTI) A 32-year old army personnel has been arrested on charges of attempting to sexually assault a teenaged girl here and investigations showed he was a repeat offender having allegedly raped a 15-year old last year at the same place, police said today.
Brijesh Kumar Yadav, working with a the Signal Regiment of infantry division in Secunderabad here, was arrested yesterday following a complaint by the 19-year old girl that he attempted to rape her near Ammuguda area on July 23 night after "assaulting" her boy friend and a constable.
He was caught after a police constable passing by the area rushed to the spot on hearing cries of the girl.
The incident occurred when the girl and her friend took shelter under a tree near a hillock as it was raining.
Police said the man dragged the girl into nearby bushes after attacking her friend and tried to rape her. When she resisted, he had hit her.
During investigation, it came to light that Yadav had allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl, daughter of a retired army officer, in December last year at the same isolated area near Ammuguda adopting similar modus operandi, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar told reporters.
The accused had then too dragged the girl into the bushes and raped her after chasing away a boy, who had accompanied her, he said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Zone) B Sumathi said they were able to crack the previous case based on scientific and circumstantial evidence. "We sent the evidences collected to the Forensic Science Laboratory and within 24 hours it was confirmed that the accused (in this case) was also involved in the rape of the girl in December last year," she said.
A sketch of the suspect drawn based on the inputs given by the girl also matched with Yadav.
Besides, the way he beat up the victim girls was similar. Based on scientific and forensic evidences the earlier case was detected, she said.
In the latest incident, Yadav fled the scene on seeing the police constable, who gave a chase along with another colleague and managed to nab him.
A native of Bhagalpur in Bihar, he was produced before a court which remanded him to judicial custody, police said. PTI
